Cause in order to get the eagles there, Shepard would've had to master the fabrication of quantum physics thus extracting the subatomic particles of atoms that construct the macrocosm.

Knowing that the universe is infinitely big and repeats itself over time, Shepard would have to find the opportune moment to open the portal. Thus it was possible by manipulating the particles that make up his and the eagle universe. Then he had to mathematically calculate the perfect time to open this portal. Waiting for the most convenient moment for their universes to aline perfectly. If he had failed that, then the portal could have ended up opening to some fire molten alien planet that could have boiled over into the his world causing unavoidable catastrophic destruction.
