Unless a former companion is dead, their bound to get a cameo/mention/reference.Saberchic wrote...
I just hope that there's actual purpose to the cameos. Having them shove people in for the sake of having said character pop up is very disappointing. I actually hope there's barely any cameos. Let the past characters go and give me some interesting new ones. That's what I hope for.

That's not neccessarily true. Oghren, Wynne and numerous companions from DA:A weren't mentioned at all in DA2.

But isn't Wynne dead? But yeah, we should of heard some references from Anders about the hot elf, the drunken dwarf and the dwarf.Fast Jimmy wrote...

I hope they keep them at a minimum. It's a cameo, not a reunion.
Not to mention it isn't even a reunion unless you look at it from a metagame perspective where you're all "Hey!" and the returning character's like "Hey!" and the Inquisitor's like "...uh, hi?" like that friend you dragged along to a family get-together.

I'd like to know what happens to Shale. She was by far my favorite character.
This. Also, I suspect Leliana will be there, as well as Isabella, and brief apperances by the Warden and by the Champion. Isabella was there at Orgins, and she did get a ship back at the end of DA2. So I'll guess she'll be there in some capacity.
I was hoping to see Anders again, since (if you left him alive) there is some story there. However, the VA for Anders confirmed recently on twitter that he isn't going to be in the game. I suspect the same might happen with Fenris' VA, since he does VA work for WoW (Lor'themar) and they are working on the next expansion.

-Oghren will walk by, look at the camera, burp and then shout "THUNDER HUMPER!" before disappearing
-Zevran and Isabella will appear and have sex with the inquisitor
-Sandal will be there and say "enchantment?" and Bodahn will sell you junk
-Wade and Herren will sneak into your room and demand that you get them crafting materials that are somehow better and more rare than high dragon scales, fire golem shell, etc...
-Merril will stumble onto the scene holding hands with a pride demon, ranting about how it's not the demon's fault that it has a bad attribute, berate you if you don't make a deal with the demon, then claim that she knew all along there was no such thing as a good spirit and frolic off into the sunset cutting herself, leaving the inquisitor to fight the pride demon (who's name is Fluffer McFluffington III )
-Isolde will arrive and shriek "who is this MAN/WOMAN Teagan!" even if Teagan is not there, and will promptly have the smallest possible elven servant (with their ears cut off and fed to the dogs) carry her away piggyback
-Anders will come back from the grave a second time and will now have a 3rd personality, completely different from the first two. Also he will now have a cockney accent.
-Leliana dons her plot armor of justice and helps the inquisitor build the crucible instead of fighting in the war.
-Sten is seen in one shot where he briefly looks at the camera and says "No" and is never seen again
-Hawke and the Warden go off in search of Revan and come back as straight white male humans that look and act nothing like the ones you played, that way they can have a long and significant cameo and appeal to a wider audience. Anyone who played as anything else was wrong anyways.
-Bethany if alive will claw her way onto the scene with her monster hands and you must start an epic quest to find a cure
-Carver if alive will suddenly start making akward gay passes at the male inquisitor
-Fenris has moved to a new house in a new city, but brought the mouldy furniture, rotting corpses, and cobwebs along to decorate his new home. You see him for 2.7 seconds before he throws a bottle of wine at you and you're forced to flee.
-Aveline will be back but will be written by someone entirely new who decided that she needed a battle bikini instead of armor, implants, and an anime face. Also her new goal in life is to reclaim her noble heritage and lounge in a villa all day wearing pretty pretty dresses
These are just my guesses of the most likely to appear, though there will probably be many more that I'm missing!

Seriously though, if at least one of these makes it in the game, I'll be satisfied.

ME3 had a lot of cameos because it was necessary to have them, it was the last game in the trilogy! DA2 had a decent amount.-Skorpious- wrote...
Hopefully very little. DA2 and ME3 went overboard with cameos, especially ME3.

How is it most people can hardly go an hour up town and see people they know, but in this vast galaxy every planet Shepard lands on just happens to have a person he/she met in the past just chilling out there?
Last of the trilogy or not, that was tricky to suspend belief for.

But it made sense and some you could avoid if you wanted. Like Jacob and the scientist.SergeantSnookie wrote...

XDThis made me burst out laughing. I always liked to pretend that the "canon" Revan was really some crazy guy they planted to fool everyone. It made me feel better.
On that vein though, I reaaaally hope they don't pull something like THAT again. It was very jarring going throughout SWTOR with everyone refering to Revan as a man. V__V I'd rather have Hawke and the Warden dead than have them be forced and portrayed as...I don't know. Generic Human Noble Warrior men.

As for other characters, given the amount of furore over Lelianna's return if the player had killed her, I would imagine that only characters that could not be killed or whose death was ambiguous could make a return.
So Morrigan, if stabbed in Witch Hunt, fell through the mirror which likely healed her, which is why she is able to return. Varric was indestructible in DA2, so he returned. Isabella was plot armoured, so even if handed over to Arishok, she was able to escape and has been seen since in comics. Sebastian definitely survived, as did Aveline. However, Merrill, Fenris, Anders, Bethany, Carver could all end the game dead, so it seems highly unlikely they could make a significant appearance in DA:I. The only exception might be for whichever character romanced Hawke as mechanics might allow for them to appear to give information about Hawke's whereabouts and this would mean they could only appear if this happened in your game.

I think the Warden and Hawke are unlikely to make an appearance but more likely referred to in a non-committal way, like the Warden was dealt with in Asunder. However, I would like to find out what was supposed to have happened to them at the end of DA2 since Leliana's declaration that the disappearance of both could not have been mere co-incidence seemed to hint at a future plot thread. Possibly our interaction would be with their spirit/memory of their presence, like with Hawke's father, so what their race/appearance was would not be important.

I though so too initially about the warden and hawke but the undercurrent seems to be indicating it will be more than that. I think it's a mistake Bioware is making but I guess it's for fanservice.
The mirror didn't heal Morrigan. It was a mistake to have allowed the player to ever have stabbed her, a mistake Bioware made, just like it was amistake to have allowed any players to kill any of the DAO characters like Leliana. They meaning Bioware hadn't though the game through as far as which characters would be in future games.
I get the feeling we'll see pretty much everbody with rare exception.I know it's not realistic, but again they want as many fans as possible to buy the game, so they're trying to cater to as many interests as they can.
