But change by anothers' agency is not. IMO the fundamental mistrust we have as humans towards others' attempts to do something to us "for our own good" is, as a rule, entirely justified. All "sacredness" of our natural identities aside, the pragmatic aspect of our moral injunction against things like brainwashing is based on this insight into human nature: that if someone wants to brainwash you, you can, as a rule, assume that this serves their interest more than yours.
