I have come to expect something in the DA family to cause me to bang my head against a rock wall. This time it is the Ancient Rock Wraith. Is there an easy way to turn this thing into pebbles? I can barely keep my party alive long enough to administer only moderate damge.

Ah yes, I was expecting the "how do I kill the rock wraith" thread
Pull your entire party behind the pillars when it begins its red glow attack. Area effect will kill the mooks, target the RW with DPS heavy attacks.
And yes, you will meet Bartrand again. I almost expect another "how do I kill..." thread then again.

This is a tough fight, especially for a newcomer.
First, are you taking shelter when it uses its massive beam attack? If not, when it's charging up, you need to switch on the "Do not Move" button and then manually move all of your party members behind the giant pillars before it lets loose with the beam. That will avoid you taking damage during this attack.
It helps if you have all party members who have rune slots in their armour equip Runes of Lightning Warding. This will make party members who have the runes virtually invulnerable to the attacks of the little Profanes that the Rock Wraith summons. Varric, for instance, will have something like 95 per cent protection versus their electric attacks. (You might need to load an earlier save to have Sandal equip your guys.)
The Rock Wraith is most vulnerable to damage when it's in pieces. Always make sure to pour on the damage at this time.
I find its most devastating attack to be when it switches into a boulder form. You got to spread out as much as you can when that attack is coming. Stonewall can stop the Ancient Rock Wraith when it's rolling around.
Here's a more lengthy breakdown on the Wiki.

or select them all (LB+RB on consoles) and move them all at once.thats1evildude wrote...

Thanks for the tips Caradoc and Thatsoneevildude. I will definitely reload to an earlier save and do the rune thing. As for the Wiki link, I did read through that briefly but it is much better understood when you guys summarize.

If you're going back far enough, I find it helps to take ranged companions. I never like to get too close to the RW. Then I basically just kite him. Job done.

The only ranged person in my party is Varric (level 10). I also have 2 Mages, Bethany (level 10) and Merril (level 10). I do have other party members, but none of them are carrying ranged weapons.
Question (this might not be the right forum to ask/answer), but what are some of the tactics that have been used that appear successful? I imagine that I'll assign that question just for the "The Rock".
Here is the rest of my party -
Aveline - level 10 Warrior
Isabela - level 10 Rogue
Fenris - level 10 Warrior
Anders - level 10 Mage

Are Varric, Bethany and Merrill in your party for the RW? If so, you have good DPS, and Bethany's healing spell.
I tend to do quite a bit manual control for boss battles, you need it to avoid the red light attack of the RW anyway. Other than that general tactics setup works quite well. Set them to use potions as needed. The second the RW stops its flash attack, pepper it with all high DPS attacks, preferably with debuffs (these are good for any boss). You can take out the profane with area attack spells, such as firestorm. The pillars provide good cover for the rollerball attack as well.
If you haven't used cross-class combos yet, now is a good time to learn. They can increase your damage output drastically.

Woo-hoo!!!!! we did it....
Initially I had Bethany in my party, but momma complained about possibly losing her daughter so I left her home. I brought along Isabela and Anders (btw, I left Merril at home, thinking about catching up with her later.....
I also changed my tactics a little.
Now it is time to sharpen my sword and do some gonad sniping.....
Thanks as always for the help.
