We know from Ascension and from ME2 promotional videos that the Collectors grab up sentient lifeforms, often ones with certain oddities involved.  We also know, from the Shepard trailer, that they're snagging up humans like it's some sort of Humanity Blowout Sale.

I think the Collectors are collecting genetic material, trying to capture the full range of oddities and transformations that a certain species can attain.  My guess is they are the means through which we will meet a flesh and blood Prothean.  It seems to me that collectors would protect the collected, and they plan to use them to reinstate the species, perhaps outside of Citadel space, in order to stage an attack on the Reapers from the outside, not utilizing their network to live and expand.  Why would the Collectors pay big money for odd specimens just to kill and/or eat them?  They are may be trying to remain hidden from the Reapers, and they take a Renegade approach to doing so, which will come at odds with Shepard's plan of exposing them and recapturing the Collected humans.

I would have thought it more likely that there is a connection between the Reapers and the Collectors. Yes, Reapers destroy organic life forms, but they're certainly not above using them as well, such as with the keepers and the various indoctrinated.

What makes me wonder about this is the timing of the change in the Collectors' behaviour. What I mean is, up until recently in the games' timeline, the Collectors only took individuals or small groups. Then a small group of organics - led by a human and supported by a human fleet - stops the reaper invasion, which, as far as we know, no other past civilization had been able to do. After that event, the Collectors begin collecting whole human civilizations. Maybe to see what makes these puny humans different than other sentient species? Maybe to weaken them for the next Reaper attempt? Maybe as some sort of larger plot that we don't have enough information to figure out yet?

Whether you buy that or not, I don't think the timing of the change in the Collector's behaviour can be a coincidence though. Clearly it's related to the thwarted Reaper attack in some way.

They might also work for the reapers to study life so that the reapers are better equipped to kill everyone. This could explain why they are specifically targeting humans as reapers might feel that they are the greatest threat.

They might also just be trying to bargain for sanctuary when the reapers decide it genocide day.

The fact that they have advanced technology, means that either the reapers are handing out tech, or that somehow the collectors got a huge stockpile of Prothean tech. Or they could have just developed it themselves. Whichever way they are obviously a known species, and Saren/Geth would have informed the Reapers about them.

The Reapers are the Weyland-Yutani Co. and the Collectors are Xenomorphs.

I don´t buy that. The dev vid says that maybe the reapers are handing the tech but i´m almost 100 percent sure that this is a misleading information. I believe that they have ties with the protheans or are a race even more ancient than they are.
