The Guardian news clip: Canada To Lay Claim To North Pole

Isn't the North Pole an "international free zone"?  I don't know why Canada thinks it owns the entire North Pole, or why Canada thinks the rest of the world would just go along with that ridiculous claim.  If anything, Greenland looks like it would have more of a legitimate claim, (see the map below.)  I also do not know how Canada thinks it can challege  Russia (which has a stronger military) that will definitely make the similar claim to counter Canada's, given that Russia already has navy patrolling the North Pole waters and grabbing any "trespassers".

Map of Arctic North Pole

I know why Canada laid the claim.  The place has oils, gas and resources.  Of course.  However I doubt any other country would recognize Canada's claim and let just Canada grab all those energy resources.

Meh, just let them have it. They really don't have much else going on.

There are OILS and and gas and energy resources in that place.   I doubt other countries would just let Canada grab them.

On one hand, I pity Canada. On the other, this is one REAL occurrence of them not being utterly bland! A mixed bag.

So I'll just say, "lol." BRB, claiming the Atlantic Ocean. I'll make a fortune on superfreighter tolls.

Canada could pull it off if they hold their share of the world's maple syrup reserve hostage.

That's right.! And this is just the first step in our master plan to take over the world. Soon you'll all be saying 'Eh' and wearing toques. Surrender to the inevitable and bow down to your new Canuck overlords.

Eh.

Also, there are a lot of Canadians here on the BSN I've noticed.

Probably something to do with Bioware.

If that happened, an army of overweight Americans would invade Canada. Bad idea.

Oh joy, Russia having claimed a big part of it is now doing this

"
President Vladimir Putin has ordered Russia’s armed forces to expand their presence in the Arctic region, one day after Canada confirmed its intent to lay claim to the sea bed under the North Pole.
Putin, speaking Tuesday at a meeting with the top military brass, said beefing up the Arctic forces is among the top priorities for the military.

Russia must possess every lever for the protection of its security and national interests in the Arctic, Russian President Vladimir Putin said. "The formation of new forces and military units of the prospective combat configuration of the Armed Forces is due to end next year. I request that you pay special attention to the deployment of infrastructure and military units in the Arctic,"

GG Canada, GG getting curb stomped in the not so far off Artic War.

Canada vs Russia? Sounds like its NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.

Canadians are too scared to pull a stunt like that.

Are we just sort of forgetting here that Canada is part of NATO? I mean, that doesn't mean much while Obama is president, but he'll be a lame duck after 2014 and gone after 2016.

I doubt my overweight countrymen would have the energy to do so. The most i could picture happening is overturned IHOP tables.
