Your title and article don't match.

John Baird was reiterating an announcement made by Stephen Harper 6 years ago, and it's about the continental shelf, not the north pole.

Canada is not laying claim to the North Pole, only to significant sections of the shelf, and a UN Treaty actually supports the motion.

It's about the continental shelf, and it complies with international law. The article linked in the OP isn't even about the North Pole, nor does it mention the North Pole even once.
