Personally, I'm less concerned about the potential of a confrontation between Russia and Canada than I am about the fact that it's getting warm enough up there for the North Pole to be an economically viable territory.

Eveyone will start shouting at them and  tell them that they can't do that. The Canadians will just apologise to the rest of the world with a classical "We're sorry :(" and everything will be alright^_^

Maybe the Japanese would be willing to give you that I-400 we found off the coast of Hawaii. It has some water damage, but maybe you could find some use of it.

The reason why the canadians have made that claim is likely due to Russia's current expansionistic attitute. After all, they've just recently reopened several old soviet military bases and have deployed about 9000 additional soldiers to these places, I think. Not to forget last week's russian submarine that planted a russian flag on the bottom of the sea near the North Pole.
Along with Denmark and Norway, Canada is likely on alert. If Russians get too much territory so close to Greenlad and Canada, there's real reason to worry.

Russia planted the flag back in 2007.

Russia is only NOW reopening those bases and building up new forces in response to what it sees as NATO expansion and the Canadian claim. Greenland also belongs to Denmark.

Do not pass go do not collect 200 dollars.

Also pick up a better news source.

I didn't know they ever left. Didn't they need the crown's permission to amend their constitution till the mid 1980's?

There are OILS and and gas and energy resources in that place.   I doubt other countries would just let Canada grab them.

They didn't.  Technically Elizabeth II is sovereign.  Who I think has reigned since '53.
