Best write up I've read so far in terms of the background and design philosophy from the latest PR rounds.

So is anyone else going to be in the beta or should I represent BSN there?

Only pledged $50 myself. Need $100+ for a Beta Key IIRC. You should do a Let's Play that you don't intend to finish to drum up some lols while the rest of us secretly seethe in anger for not having the game to play like you.

I'm not, I'm not even in the Wasteland 2 beta I'm eligible for because I don't want to spoil it for myself before the game is finished. So is anyone else going to be in the beta or should I represent BSN there?

I'm waiting for the game to be released before I see whether I purchase it. While I value Obsidian's reputation, there's a great deal I'd like to see before I trust them with money for a finished product, particularly in how they design party NPCs and whether the ruleset will be functional.

They have an addon thing now, you can get the beta for an extra $25

I figure I'll be getting this game when it comes out, if only to see what the old "isometric experience" is actually like without having to deal with the painful interfaces and terrible hack n slash combat of some old games (I tried to play divine divinity, got about ten minutes into it).
Shadowrun Returns is the only one of these new-RPG-games-fasioned-on-old-RPG-games I've played, and it's extraordinarily simplistic (you don't even have a real inventory! Ammo is "handgun" and "shotgun!"). I sure hope this game (and Wasteland 2, for that matter) will be more complex than that.

It was heralded as being an Infinity-Engine-esque game, with the help of today's technology. Imagine Fallout 2. By that standard, this game looks AMAZING.
The comments people are making in this thread about the game's graphics are making me cringe. The entire point of the game was to say "this design model in AAA gaming focuses on all the wrong things." The "hype" about this game is its minimalist nature, with a focus on gameplay mechanics, story, volume of content and character options.
Saying "there isn't enough attack recoil" or "OMG, they recycled attack animations" is the exact opposite of what the developers were going for, or what the fans who support it are excited about.
I'm just scratching my head about it, honestly.
I'll love this game. Almost as much as I'll love the Pillars of Eternity forums, for the people who will not be there.

Romances are out.

Ugh.. IE games (which is what Pillars is based on) combat was more akin to DAO (but better, cause no mmo bs, 6 party members vs 4, ect..) than Diablow. (which was what Divine Divinity was more like....cause... retarded publishers)
And yea, they will be more complex than SR.

That's good to know--though all the gameplay videos I've seen of Baldur's Gate combat make it seem way too fast and chaotic. We'll see I guess.

It is...once you un-pause. That's why I'll take a GOOD turn based system over RtwP.
As far as Pillars goes...aside from being able to pause whenever you want and switch characters, issue commands...they'll have all kinds of settings & parameters for the game auto pausing (like the IE games had) and they'll also be introducing a new slow mo feature, which really peaks my interest, because that sounds like it could really help out the 'chaotic' nature of everything when you un-pause. Like when my 6 party members + enemies are flinging **** all over the screen, it looks like a fireworks show and I have no idea wtf is exactly going on.
Not only that but the feedback...I'll be able to take in everything that's happening better and react accordingly, which is one of the big advantages of a turn based system.

Romances are out.
That has nothing to do with how they design NPCs.

That's because people didn't use auto-pause. My BG1 combat, for example, has auto-pause after every condition so it's straight up impossible for it to be chaotic. You can react after every event.

Thanks. I may have to try to cajole myself into picking up one of them (BG1 or 2) when they go on sale again.

I haven't played Wasteland 2, but I hear it's shaping up to play a lot like Fallout 1&2, so if you liked those you'll probably like it. I never got into infinity engine games much either. I tried Baldur's Gate but I kept dying because the graphics weren't sharp enough for me to tell my party's sprites from the background half the time.

Yeah BG's combat system makes me want to punt a squirrel off the grand canyon. I just...yeah.
DAO's combat was also pretty slog. If the combat must be slow I'd rather it be turn based. RTWP in a non action game (part or otherwise) does nothing for me. Just makes combat more of a chore than it needs to be.

It's honestly YMMV if you should get the EE or the original games from GOG. With a few mods you're getting a very similar experience for cheaper.

I figure I'd got for the Enhanced Edition on Steam for 5 bucks. I don't use GOG because you can't buy things offline (I can buy Steam "credit" at Gamestop with cash).
