So what's the story with this game? The only thing I've ever played that is remotely similar to this is Starcraft, and even then the only similarity is that both are isometric. I've been looking to get into these sorts of games.

The game will not be entirely dissimilar to Dragon Age: Origins. If you enjoyed Origins and do not care about a rotatable camera or recent graphical rendering techniques, you may like Pillars of Eternity. If the way Origins played was not your thing, there is not much that could get you into Pillars of Eternity, short of a setting and/or plot which grabs your attention.

If you want a good idea of what this game will be like, I would try Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, both of which are very different games, and Planescape: Torment. The game which probably best represents what Pillars of Eternity will be like is Baldur's Gate 2. Baldur's Gate 2 is probably the most similar RPG to what you would expect nowadays too: many well developed companions, many dialog choices, a detailed plot with relatable villains, tons of enemies and loot, tons of places to go, tons of characters, tons of "quests", etc. It is basically an all-in-one package.

I liked Origins, a lot more than most other BW games. The only thing I wasn't so fond of were the romances.

Combat seems awfully static IMO. No recoil animations, barely any movement in battle. Not really digging the magic missiles either, though the fireball has a nice effect.

It's a pre-release build, right?  You can't expect every animation to be in place this early.

Lookin' good. Now Obsidian just needs to work out the kinks in their Backer Portal so I can finalize my pledge Image IPB

I'm sure there are kinks, but I think that excuse only goes so far when this is explicitly a "gameplay teaser." I don't think they would have released it if they didn't think it was in a presentable state relative to the final product they have planned.

While the graphics are nothing to write home about, they are about the level I expected when I made my donation. Provided they can make good on the story, gameplay, and mechanics, I will be a satisfied customer.

I watched in 1080p the earlier video showing sample gameplay in something of an alpha build, and the graphics were vibrant and sharp. I'm also liking the turn-based combat system.

Smart of them to change the name. "Project Eternity" is how I feel about this game.

That's it.

I'm fine with them keeping the video short - one of the biggest bloats of AAA development is their Marketing. You've already paid for the product... what more did you really want to see? They aren't trying to sell you.

I haven't paid anything.

Anyway, I'm not sure what I was expecting. Those of my friends that are looking forward to this game have just blown it up to something it apparently wasn't. I thought it was something else.

Not that there is anything wrong with this, just surprised me :P

Teaser = not the full product, just a few elements (likely of the more epic variety) to give you a taste of what can happen and get / keep your interest.

My guess is that if you're after recoil effects, you'll likely be disappointed. There was lots of tactical cutting to a new scene just after each melee bod had swung his sword for the first time. My guess is that's because his second, and third, (and so on) swings are identical. Whether that's permanent or not, you'd have to ask the Obsidian guys.

But do you know what, its not unexpected. This game was never being made to full blown AAA graphical and motion standards. That's not the damn point. The time in development is being spent elsewhere (and besides, Obsidian doesn't have a multi-mega budget for this).

I think there are three sources of hype for the RPG formerly known as Project Eternity.

1. OMG, this idea got rejected by publishers but Obsidian turned to fans and we funded it and its ACTUALLY GOING TO HAPPEN (squee!)

2. I loved the old isometric RPGs for nostalgia, or tactics, or story, or [insert your gameplay element perceived to be lacking or abandoned in more modern titles here] and its so awesome that Chris Avellone is actually making one of these again (squee!)

3. Oh, hey, nice video. Wow! Knock me down with a futterwacken and call me Jimmy, did you see those zombies explode from that excessively overpowered fireball? Now I know what I'm going to replace my Bright Wizard with when Warhammer Online gets turned off on the 18th. Stand back, peoples, I'm rolling a freaking mage! (squee!)

I'd be curious to test this hypothesis by seeing if your friends fell into any of the above categories. ;)

You won't have to worry about any romances in this game.

Well, fair enough.

I said "you" had already paid, simply because the trailer was presented for backers of the project, not for peopl brand new to the concept of the game. I'm betting there will be more "public friendly" versions of trailers before release, for people who aren't excited about the prospect of an old-school style RPG and, instead, want to enjoy a game for its graphics or animations or what-have-you. Those will be marketing videos, while this is a status updatw video for those who are really excited about the old-school design and are now just getting icing on the cak with graphics that would have been dated back in 2005.

Evidently and thanfully, not. If I did I would hope its nothing like the BW romances and it probably wouldn't be since they're the only ones who pull that stuff.

I haven't followed this game at all, besides listening to others hype.

But if others say it has solid characters and good story then I'll get it.

Yay! Happiness is knowing Josh Sawyer and Chris Avellone are working on a fantasy RPG at this very moment.

To tell the truth, I don't really consume the romance content that BioWare creates. Maybe for achievements or inadvertently, but I don't jump into a BioWare game thinking "man, I can't wait to unlock that sex scene."

What I do appreciate, however, is the concept of companionship. I greatly value when my character is allowed to be capable of feeling more than simply the drive to obtain whatever MacGuffin the game presents, and when the characters in my party are more than just tools I can use to more easily acquire said MacGuffin. A sole line of comedic banter to entirely characterize the dwarf in my party doesn't really suffice, either.

There has to be a happy medium between "give gift, receive sex" and "this is my traveling companion, Healer. He heals me."

Have you ever played an Obsidian game before? Or the games that Pillars of Eternity are attempting to emulate?

I don't see why this is even a concern.

If you're speaking generally, however, I don't get who you are responding to.

That was the "epic" stuff that was supposed to keep my interest? Oh my.

I dunno. Sure, I had low expectations and all, but I didn't expect it to be that bad.

I think it's called musing. He isn't talking to anyone in particular.
I agree with Maverick to a point. NOT playing any game to unlock a sex scene, that's where the romance haters formerly on the forum erred in their thinking about the romance lovers.
Companionship is very important to me as well. But to me a relationship needs to be legitimate, if you're going to have romantic content at all and while that should include sex, it also should include the companionship aspects.

Of course some games don't have romances and are fine without them and as long as a player understands and accepts that then things are fine as far as a feeling about romances are concerned.
