I prefer modern games to be modern games, not an outdated low-budget products which none of publishers and almost none of players can take seriously.

...Oh, and if I would want to troll here, then I would say something like "Interesting, will the Failures of Eternity be released on Fail Machine or Fail Box?". But I prefer just to say that I don't like the outdated games.

Oh woe is me. Seival, your trolling is an art-from. It's hard to believe that you aren't a complete idiot :D

At least you're good at drawing stuff.

Hmmmm. These jokes aren't as funny. Do you mind going back to the ones like "gameplay is the least important feature of a video game?"

People don't take it as seriously as Beyond with its perfect, pristine graphics and its perfect scores going on with players going into deep discussion about the themes and events of the game. Interactive movies. They're truly the final evolution of games.

I suppose my biggest gripe comes from the voiced protagonist, as off-topic as that may seem.

I see these things as conceits to telling a story in DA:O. In DA2, with the paraphrasing/lack of direct control of dialogue or what's being said, I feel this extends to every aspect of the dialogue. With a silent protag, these instances of forced narrative seem like small conceits, sacrificies on the larger altar of narrative coherency. In DA2, I felt the character could never truly be mine, since the character was saying only what Bioware thought I would want the character to say. That gap in ownership made the entire process passive, making these instances of forced narrtive conceits more jarring.

If any of that makes any lick of sense.

I understand that PC VO is a problem for you. There's nothing wrong with that; it's a subjective preference and people are free to differ (that's what makes it subjective, no?).

My point was more that in terms of the design Bioware didn't actually do anything different in DA:O.The was absolutely and literally no difference in any of the ways you were rail-roaded. The writers still and very clearly - especially in the origins - wrote the characters with certain personalities in mind and with certain intention in the dialogue. DA:O just hides that from you (which makes it poorly designed). But that poor design can be fixed in text with things like [sarcasm] and [frustrated] type signifiers, so that's not a problem.

To me, a silent VO character can never be mine because I can never know what emotion I'm expressing and what I'm trying to express in the world. Conversations are two-sided and silent VO hides everything about what's happening on my side. The NPC is still reacting to something - but I can never know what that is. Is the NPC stupid? Socially incompetent? Did my super perfect diplomat that can convice all villans to surrender and give up their life of evil suddenly fail to convey basic social cues? Who knows!

My next action is informed by how my last one was interpreted. But I can never know what that was, because I have no information as to what happened. If I'm mistunderstood I try to clarify - but that's absolutely impossible in a silent VO game. So instead I have to re-load the conversation.

This was very stream of consciousness, but I hope you understand.

You'd think Bioware was famous for worshipping murder or something! Wait... I seem to remember this one game they did...
:D

Regardless, not every game needs to hinge on murder, anymore than every fantasy setting needs to be set in medieval Europe. But the DA series has had the ship sail on both fronts now for an IP. So the difference between one game to the next is execution. DA2's execution, that Hawke was a tragic character who was powerless to prevent things, was made extremely forced, simply due to the fact that Hawke was allowed to easily overcome every obstacle and foe that was put in his way by stabbigng it to death... unless the game says "no" in a way that completely segregates gameplay and story.

I agree with you that RPGs don't have to turn on murder for the sake of murder. I actually think FN:NV tried to go in that direction. And PT:ST is definetly the game that suceeds in that.

The thing is, even by its own standard, Hawke can't kill anyone important without making things much worse. It's a lot like saying that someone could have ended the threat of communism by offing Stalin. The reality is that, not really. Would Anders have stopped if someone replaced Meredth? I doubt it. Cullen maybe takes over, and he's not that much less of a loon.

Don´t bother. Seival just seems to take the view that will clash the most with the average opinion. Back in the ME3 endings s/he was very disturbing.

I really pray s/he´s a psychology student doing research...

And? I know that some people like playing outdated games. But the past is the past, no reason to dwell on it. The best place for games like Planescape: Torment is a museum.

You actually have a point there, it should be somewhere where people interested in culture can study and learn from it. Maybe some will learn that in a game gameplay comes first, these times it almost feels like videogame companies are frustrated 3D animators. The way we are going, in 10 years games will play themselves.

Can't make any promises on that one. Someone's gonna respond to him, at which point I will be overtaken w/ the insatiable desire to respond as well.
