Hello,
Wasn't sure if this was an apropriate place to ask this, but my question pertains to the Dragon Age Pen and Paper RPG.
I don't know if anyone here plays it, but I help run a small group of friends and DA fans, and I encountered some confusion. When setting up a mage character during the character creation process, I noticed it's basically impossible to get a magic focus (the entropy focus for example). You need a magic focus to get the corresponding talent (ex: the Entropy Talent), but the only way to get focuses seems to be when rolling your benefits and choosing from your background. Neither mage backgrounds (apostate and circle) allow you to choose or roll any of the magic focuses and leveling up seems to only get you talents. I feel like I'm missing something important, are we allowed to have a handpicked focus? I don't see any other way to get them.
I know I'd be lucky to find anyone who can help me. I would really apretiate the help if anyone can.
Thank you.

I might be able to shed some light on this. On page 27 of the Set 1 Players Book it explains that you can take a new focus when you level your character. The exact text is:
You can pick one new ability focus. If you gained an even numbered level, you must choose a focus from one of your primary abilities. If you gained an odd numbered level, you must choose a focus from one of your secondary abilities.
So a mage could take the Entropy focus (assuming the character meets the requirements) at level 2.
That being said, one of the advantages of tabletop gaming over video gaming is that the rules aren't set in stone. If you and your players want to tweak them, then tweak away!
Hope this helps.

Oh Maker!
Thank you, thank you!
I had totally forgot about that part. When I went to originally check, I specifically looked at the mage class powers section for leveling up (on the next page).
I'm an idiot.
And I know what you mean about the advantage. I've been half tempted to write a quirks and flaws table for character creation.
Thank you again, good Doctor!

My pleasure!
The DA tabletop system is really simple, and cool but there are defiantly times when it could be laid out more clearly in the books.
Happy gaming.
