Is Anyone Else Bothered By the Qunari's lack of Armor?

Replaying the second game, I have found it quite strange that the Qunari wear little armor. It seems strange that they'd use little and cover themselves in war paint and yet are the same race/culture to (presumably) invent cannons and gunpowder.

What are your thoughts?

Makes them easier to kill, so it's cool.

When your built like Qunari, wearing armor would just make thing too easy, So they go lightly armored because the Qun demand that all lesser races get a handicap

Sounds about right.

I put it in the category of bad crap in DA2 that if I ignore won't show up again in future games. They also said the same battle cries in combat that Sten did but it was awfully done.

That's what I thought, but they seem to wear the same type of armor here:

Yeah, it does. Firearms haven't been invented yet, so the Qunari, supposedly the most technologically advanced race in Thedas, should possess the common sense to wear proper combat attire in combat.

And ships are a poor excuse, as they can easily stow armor and don it once their voyage is over.

I am curious about the devs perspective on this. The shipwreck is still the explanation for why they had no armor in DA 2, but since that has apparently been adapted into the new regular Qunari look, it's possible the Qunari armor mentioned in the codexes has been retconed away.

To try and prove their prowess as a warrior is so great they don't need armour. It isn't unheard of.

It's hot and tropical up in Par Vollen, no? Think of them like Dothraki, except with better technology.

I think the answer's probably going to be "because it looks cool."

I personally don't have a problem with the lack of armor

I always thought they only wear armor in combat since they usually operate on a no ape shall harm ape rule on Par Vollen so it's their casual/formal wear. Plus it gives the ladies something to look at.

The shipwreck was an extremely convenient excuse. That, and Bioware wanted to show off the physique.

Now I just want the Qunari to armor up a massive glaring weakpoint with some torso armor. Otherwise I can't stop thinking about how all it could take is a well-placed arrow shot or a stab in the gut. Whereas some good torso armor could be a lifesaver and make you basically swordproof and whatnot. Just a simple steel breastplate or Greek cuirass to protect that chest area with those vital organs, all I'm asking for. Even some leather armor is fine The Qunari are supposed to be this serious threat that once conquered half of Thedas, currently stalemates Tevinter, and makes Thedas quake in their boots at the thought of a Qunari invasion.

I'm a little bit of a stickler about "believeable" and "practical" armor. Things like chainmail bikinis and gas masks in space annoy me. Thats just me.

Oh well.

I have the same problem with the lack of qunari armour as I do with the infamous chainmail bikinis of yester year; it makes no sense.

Did anyone else notice how in DAO, Sten criticized Morrigan for her outfit, but then:

Outfits like these make little sense to me and make me question how they wear it on and off in the first place.
Why couldn't it be just a simple bra-like strap around the chest?

Sten might not be fond of the part of the Qunari and she has more clothes than Morrigan and Par Vollen is tropical, so it's practical in the safety of home.

I assume the paint they wear conveys protection against certain magical attacks, kind of like how kaddis protects your dog. That's why the qunari were irritatingly resistant to fire and electricity in DA2.

Besides, armour in Dragon Age serves a different purpose than RL armour, where it's meant to prevent damage. In DA, armour just reduces damage. The people in DA are generally made of iron and can suffer being impaled, sliced, set on fire and shot full of arrows without permanent damage. The shirtless qunari are hardly any less protected against attack than the fellows in full plate.

That is somewhat jarring.

That's never a good enough explanation for anything.

They're very traditional.

By traditional I mean they follow the old laws of "The less it covers, the higher the armor rating" and I for one fully support this ideology.
