Is Anyone Else Bothered By the Qunari's lack of Armor?

The more skin showing, the higher your AC. Modesty and game balance are the only reasons why they're not running around in banana hammocks (or going commando) like Frank Miller's Spartans.

The Romans conquered all France (the main land of the Celts) easily and later southern Britain. Only the bravest and strongest of tribes by using the hills and mountains and facing low number of Roman legions could stop them. The Romans indeed have population problems and couldn't maintain big armies after since 3rd century to pacify the edges of their empire.
BTW if you were naked and you knew how to aim soldiers while riding a horse you were a natural winner! Like Huns, Turks and Mongols (and they at least had some clothes!)
In the late Medieval Age the finest of steel armor and weapons were forged and produced. 1000 Roman soldiers wouldn't stand a chance against 100 1st-Reich foot-knights! (a little exaggerated but stil...)

Back to the topic, I think the Qunari should use thick Leader Armors.

Julian is enough.
Indeed, the german steel is one of the best, but it's useless if the ones that wield the weapons made from it don't know how to use them.
The germans used the forests, mountains, night attacks, hit and run tactics, ambushes. They tried to avoid fighting in the conventional roman ways.Even when they fought naked they had shields, armor and helmets, but it wasn't that common.
As for the turks, huns and mongols...I know. We had some history with them.Still, they didn't win all the way through. The most they've gotten from us were yearly pays from Wallachia, but we rebeled a few times and gave them some serious beatings (and suffered some on our own turn too). Shepards and farmers versus specialized ottoman armies.
So, if the germans did it, why the qunari couldn't do it ?

I think the answer's probably going to be "because it looks cool."
Artistic integrity is the real answer you're looking for.
Then again the ladies wearing that is fine, yeah I'm sexist so sue me ****es. Male Qunari aren't allowed as it looks stupid, unless they have nipple rings, in which case it's okay.

Actually, I was reffering to the physical impossibiliy of blocking an overhead chop from a qunari..let along Sten wielding a GIANT HAMMER. The mass and momentum alone would make blockign a futile endaveour.
Of course, I now see you had a different mass and momentum in mind...

I'm from the Romania, more precisely the part that was in the medieval times Wallachia and I'm a highlander ( yes, we have the highlander and lowlander thing - depends if we live closer to the mountains or the plains - among others

It could be that they have a more resistant skin that the other races. It is hinted that they are somehow connected with the dragons, so if they were altered using magic and dragon blood it is safe to assume that their skin got more resistant do blunt damage ( not the same level as the one of a dragon, but more resistant than the one of an elf or human ).
Also, they mentaly train themselves to withstand pain. They could be similar to the german berserkers when it comes to pain withstanding.

Why arent they wearing armor? Same reason you fight in the same 3 areas. Minimal effort into design.

There's also another purpose for armor in the game. Distinction. Different groups are made more identifiable by giving them stylized, unique, and iconic armor. You could argue that this could still be done while keeping practicality, but it's not a big deal to me.
In DAO, so much of the armor looked the same, you couldn't see the difference between Ferelden soldiers, mercenaries, etc. You could tell by context or dialogue, but video games are a visual medium. Why not take advantage of it to better express a faction's culture, style, or (for a lack of a better word) personality?
There is also that. There wasn't much distinguishing the different nationalities in Dragon Age; Tevinters looked just like Fereldans.
This could have been accomplished through distinctive armor design, rather than by removing as much armor as possible. I agree that armors in Origins tended to look similar to one another, although there were distinctions in color scheme and heraldry. But armor can be realistic and still have a distinct style. As a real world example, the wikipedia page for mail has three examples of visually-distinct mail armors, and it's possible to come up with many more if combinations of plate and mail are used.
I conceded that point in my post.
But it wasn't just for distinction. Giving the Qunari armor that shows off thier muscles was a stylistic choice to better express Qunari's brute strength and warrior culture. But it was at the expense of practicality and realism. It's a choice that doesn't bother me, but I can see why it bothers others.

Armor, at least the plate varierity, is rarely pulled over the head, so I don't really see the horns as the issue at hand here. But rather the fact that Qunari are unusually large, so there wouldn't be any armor forged to fit them. However it being a game, I think it is one of those cases where gameplay takes presedence over lorem and for good reason.hhh89 wrote...
While I don't want them to be naked as they were in DA2, it should be noted that due to horns their armor are probably different from the rest of Thedas. I'd like to see how Iron Bull can use the armour of the Inquisitor or Cassandra.

So the Qunari can make dreadnought ships but can't make armor? Or do you mean that there is no armor in Kirkwall that could fit them and no one in Kirkwall to forge them new armor?

In reality, even large armies are woefully underequipped. Heck, even soldiers in armies of TODAY will often complain about lack of proper equipment.

It could be that they don't have that much metal to permit using it at a huge scale. They most likely conserve it for weapons, cannons and maybe a few armors. It would fit with their policy that soldiers get one weapon that is their sould and that they have to use that weapon until it breaks. After they die, the weapons are passed on. It could be that they simply don't have enough metal for equipping huge forces with plate armor, just like the humans do with, let's say, the templars.
As for the high quality weapons - look at medieval Japan. They faced similar problems so they developed methods to make the best posible use of their resources and create high quality weapons.
As for the dreadnoughts - they are made of wood and they have a lot of that - tropical and subtropical climate.
I think that when it comes to armor, leather is their top resource, so I wouldn't be surprised if most of their armor is made from hardened leather.
