Who knows. Mayber their chest muscles are harder than steel and the don't need any armour that would only slow them down. Maybe it's arrogance. Maybe it's tradition. Maybe they just count on their enemies being unable to do anything but swoon.

On a personal level, I have absolutely no problem with them running around bare-chested. No problem at all.

Abs of steel, bro.
I too have no problem running bare-chested either. Gives me something to get distracted by.

Replaying the second game, I have found it quite strange that the Qunari wear little armor. It seems strange that they'd use little and cover themselves in war paint and yet are the same race/culture to (presumably) invent cannons and gunpowder.

What are your thoughts?

For DAII, I could justify it. They were shipwrecked and thus had to abandon heavy armor to swim for shore. They couldn't just pick up new armor also, as that would be taken as a provocation by the people.

But for the DA comics that continue the idea of lightly armored (and I mean lightly) Qunari, no I'm not a fan. I mean, if you just saw a shirtless Qunari in the streets, then that's one thing.

But an army of Qunari should be wearing armor when they go into battle. Especially since, in the Qunari wars, the Qunari were actually wearing armor.

So it's kinda a headscratcher.

you know... if we where playing a game where 1 or 2 hits from well anything could kill you, then Yea I am in full support in "Proper" looking armor. However in the games where it can take over a hundered hits to kill something... even the lesser badguys. Then no, I don't give a rats #@$ about how "not proper" an armor looks.

I wonder if this'll continue in DA:I with the qunari pc's having the armors rendered on them having the top parts partially disappearing.

Most of the Qunari, not to say ALL the QUnari, we have encountered so far, have been marines. So it stands to reason that the Qunari we have seen would fight lightly armored. Armor tends to sink.

What I was thinking.

Even without being shipwrecked, it makes sense that the navy might not be heavily armored.  It is stretching it though.

Not really stretching it, considering how naturally armoured the Qunari are. It stands to reason that they would only have additional armour at the most critical areas of their body during sea-warfare, such as head and neck. They would then have to rely on their natural toughness to sustain and survive any torso or extremety wounds.

In the 30th year of the Steel Age, the first Qunari ships were sighted off the coast of Par Vollen in the far north, marking the beginning of a new age of warfare. History calls this the First Qunari War, but it was mostly a one-sided bloodbath, with the Qunari advancing far into the mainland. Qunari warriors in glittering steel armor carved through armies with ease. Their cannons, the likes of which our ancestors had never seen, reduced city walls to rubble in a matter of seconds

It doesn't say the armour covered them completely, the could have shiny steel codpieces.

I don't actually know what codpieces means in english, but by your reaction I guess it's better for me to not know.

Thanks.
Well, mental images aside, I doubt qunari were wearing only steel codpieces.

You're not the only one OP.

The "tribal" Qunari we encountered in Kirkwall were most disappointing.

I figured it was Bioware's equivalent of the female chain bikini armor.

It's not like they've made huge strides to desexualize female characters, so they throw us a bone with the male qunari warriors.

Well, theoretically at least, a rhino covered in steel plating would be harder to kill, than a rhino without. Then again, Rhinos aren't really reliant on their mobility.

Still, it would be harder to penetrate the rhino skin than the human one.

Yes indeed. You would argue that a sentient Rhino would probably see less purpose in additional armor, since its skin already gives it a natural armor. Therefore the development of armor in this sentient rhino society, would probably be extremely limited, since they would never have encountered the need.

That's why I said DAII didn't bother me, for that very reason. Armor sinks and they either abandoned it or didn't have much to begin with. It's the comics that bother me since, well, the Qunari were fighting on land. They even had an outpost there.

I have a theory. The Qunari in DA2 had basically found a really good excuse for skiving off work for several years and were devoting themselves to the demands of the Qun that they work on their tan. I'm guessing the Arishok wasn't the brightest star in the sky and had an advisor who was a - in on the idea and b - telling him there was no way they could go back without the book. Somewhere down the line the Arishok finds out, has a serious strop, and sends them all out to fight a small war half naked as punishment. That would also explain why he suddenly completely loses his rag.

So in fact they really do fight in armour, but what we had in Kirkwall was a Qunari equivalent of an extended Club 18-30 holiday in Ibiza.
