You need to play Tali's entire recruitment mission on Hardcore or Insanity to pick up the Geth Pulse Rifle. You need to set the difficulty before starting the mission (that is, while you are still on the Normandy).

The Geth Pulse Rifle is not a very good gun, and is only usable to characters with assault rifle training. The Geth Pulse Rifle and Avenger perform about the same, which is very terrible. Both the Vindicator and Mattock (DLC) are better. All classes have pistols which are much better against armor and all classes (except Soldier) have SMGs which are better against shields and barriers. Trust me, you will not miss the Geth Pulse Rifle.

If you are a completionist and just want the Geth Pulse Rifle for your collection, then you must play the entire mission on Hardcore or Insanity.

It sort of gives Soldier another anti-shield option outside of Shotguns. Then again you can just get Viper and Revenant and never use a pistol or shotgun again. ;)

The wiki says you can set it right after landing. I think I can confirm this. I remember landing and then remembering I needed to adjust the difficulty, so rather than reload I changed the difficulty while on Haestrom. I think the key is to set the difficulty before you open the first door (or maybe cross some imaginary line).

BTW, I did not really notice any difference between Veteran difficulty (my usual setting) and Hardcore on Haestrom. Unlike Husks and LOKI mechs, the Geth do not change their characteristics when you go up in difficulty. Sure, they hit harder and take more damage, but Geth troopers don't suddenly acquire armor. So whatever tactics worked for you on lower difficulties will continue to work on Hardcore.

I think you can set it before you open the first gate, but it has been a long time.

Geth Troopers acquire shields starting on Hardcore.

Don't they just put up shields after you hit one of them, or kill one? I seem to remember them only putting up shields when one of their comrades died.

At any rate, a shielded Geth is not really any different than an unshielded one. Overload and Energy Drain work on both, whereas the tactics needed to deal with armored husks are quite different than unarmored ones. Also, IIRC, Overload doesn't work on armored Loki Mechs. I was quite shocked when I started up a game on Hardcore and got to Freedom's Progress only to find my usual tactics were now completely worthless. Thanks for playing Calvinball there, BW.
