I'd drop the humans because every human squadmate was written poorly in mass effect 3. I'd add four rocks with faces drawn on.

Alternatively, I'd add Lt. Bryant, Jondum Bau, the Vorcha, and Balak.

EDI and Tali get the axe. Literally.

I would add Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman and John Cena.

Remove: Decisions, decisions. The only ones I don't want to remove are James and Javik. I guess I'd ditch EDI and Liara.

Add: Kirrahe/Salarian STG Operative, a Balak/Batarian Soldier, Former Cerberus Operative, Independent Pirate/Mercenary.

I want all my operatives to be critical of the alliance and people who have their own views and opinions of war. I want them to challenge conventional thinking and act as perspectives for me to gather information on. I don't want them to be yes-men who bat their 'morally right' bs over the head.

Shouldn't they be more critical of the Council than the Alliance, considering it was the Council's severe lack of action that left the galaxy so open to Reaper invasion?

I don't make a distinction between the two. They're both a group of clowns who nearly let the circus burn down.

I just wish I could be hyper-critical to both the Council and the alliance. And I wish I could express pro-Cerberus opinions.

Really, the only reason I wouldn't support Cerberus in ME3 is because they're indoctrinated, and I believe they underestimate the power of the Reapers. I have no problem with their past, their ideology, or their methods.

So as you played through ME1, you wanted to join Cerberus?

No. I didn't know anything about them, only that they were trying to kill me whenever I ran into them. They weren't explained well enough to form a real opinion on them.

I'd drop EDI because although I do use her, essentially she belongs on the ship. I'd also drop Liara because I don't use her much and her time can be much better spent on research and controlling her Shadow Broker network.
I'd include Kirrahe because I've always had a soft spot for him and he would make a nice substitute for Mordin. I'd probably have the surviving daughter from the Asari monastery (can't remember her name but she seemed good at resisting mind control). I'd include Kal'Reegar because I've always liked him. My final choice would be Thane's son, Kolyat, because having a drell who isn't dying from an incurable disease would be great and I figure he has grown up and learnt a lot whilst working for Bailey on the Citadel.

more so than the fact that I dislike her, I think people were upset that she was only a scientist, yet you are forced to take her with you for two games, and she is pushed as an LI.
People want her gone to have more choice.

My theory is that a lot of people are annoyed by how she's constantly thrown at us as our supposed best friend (if not lover), that she really doesn't do anything for the plot, and that her characterization is so scattershot that she ends up not being very well developed.

People whine about Liara because she's a mandatory squadmate. It's as simple as that.

It's clear to me her characterization really has very little to do with it. The very clumsy reasons listed above are certainly a testament to that.

If that was the case, everyone would whine about everyone that isn't Garrus, Javik, and Tali, since they are the only squadmates that aren't required, one being DLC, and the other being (possibly) dead. Yet Tali is complained against. Javik has votes against him too.

Liara's characterization completely flatlines when Shepard is removed from the equation: She barely has anything to her name that isn't constant fawning over him. You don't have to like it, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Ridiculous.

There is some whining on the BSN about every character. But there's certainly much more revolving around Tali and Javik than Liara. Thankfully, this seems to be an isolated thing.

That reminds me. The post I just made is wrong. It's not as simple as that. There's another reason, I believe. That people on the BSN whine about Liara as a little act of 'rebellion' against the writers. They perceive her to be a 'favored' character, so some people proclaim how much they hate her in a childish and foolish attempt to 'get back at them.'

You are entitled to your opinion, I certainly understand how you came to the conclusion. However, I don't see anything to support it other than your say so.

A portrayal as your "closest confidante" doesn't work when you never talk to them (which you have the option of doing). It is very odd to hug someone if you never shared any personal moments with them, even after seeing them after a two year stretch (again, something you have the ability to do). The "naive scientist" and "ruthless information broker" backgrounds she has clash, and it felt like Liara was more of a spaghetti character, where the writers throw everything they can into her, then throw it at the wall to see what sticks.

Never was into her, never bought her supposed charms. Didn't even know she was behind Chakwas's office first few times I played ME1. Nothing to do with writers, nothing to do with mandatory-ness. Just a shallow character who was supposedly my friend. Except she wasn't.

I complain about her characterization, but I still wouldn't take her out of the squad. She's necessary. I even prefer romancing her in ME1, so it's not like I totally hate her. The part I don't like about the character is the extent at which she isn't able to grieve normally, and gave Shepard's body to Cerberus. They took her in a strange direction. I don't mind her storyarc in itself  - but I can't treat Liara the same afterwards. For me, there's a lot of awkwardness between the two. Even if they remain friends. I can't come around to a playthrough where I "rekindle" the romance (to me, Jack is the perfect counterpart to Liara).

The fact that such an attitude exists primarily here on the BSN, a forum filled to the gills with frustrated and powerless people attempting to assert themselves, should be a clue.

If you don't like a character, that's fine. You aren't going to like every character in every story.

I don't follow the forums. I post and go, more or less. I learned a long time ago not to take fanwank too seriously. There are fandoms far worse than this one.

There are reasons to dislike Liara not stemming from her mandatory squad status or whatever her "favored" status may be. That is all.
