The fact that such an attitude exists primarily here on the BSN, a forum filled to the gills with frustrated and powerless people attempting to assert themselves, should be a clue.
If you don't like a character, that's fine. You aren't going to like every character in every story.
And yet you're here, asserting that you're right and everyone else is wrong, oh the irony.
Tell me how does it feel to be powerless.

Perhaps they dislike the fact that Liara has a predominant feature (and shilling, which I find always seems to turn the audience of) in the "Genesis" book? Perhaps they dislike her "girl next door" status. Perhaps they dislike the fact that the Liara romance always triggers.
These significantly more reasons simply attract more people who, overall, don't like her. Their reasons for doing so just aren't the same?

I've never had that problem myself either. The only thing I did once is tell Ash and Liara I wanted a threesome -- and Ash left and Liara said "I'm glad you picked me!"

Liara is more complicated to come to terms with. She isn't forced on you or proven right necessarily. You have to give it more thought on whether her behavior is right or not. But in Ash and Kaidan's case, they are proven to be right all along. I think the writers show more favoritism towards their point of view. You have to be really pro-Cerberus to hate them. With Liara, I think it's easier to stick with Tali/Garrus/Jack/etc..

I had a Shepard that told Liara he wasn't interested, and the romance triggered anyway, it was kind of annoying.

Possibly, David. Would you entertain an alternative theory? Perhaps Liara is simply disliked more simply because, since she's given so much screen time in the world and in the Expanded Universe, that there are simply more hypothetical reasons to dislike her.
Using the word hypothetical makes them seem like they can be totally arbitrary, like "I hate Liara because I really hate the color blue", or "I hate Liara because you can't spell Liara without liar."

But after ME1, this is kind of glossed over. It doesn't get explored enough. In the end, they end up becoming just humans with tentacle heads. Like a generic Star Trek race. All of the weirdness kind of gets funneled in to Morinth in ME2, but I think all of the Asari are weird. lol. I would've liked to keep exploring that, instead of them trying to make Liara their poster/mainstream character. She's not mainstream. She's just as freaky as the rest of squad. Don't let the schoolteacher persona fool you.

I would drop edi and james. i like edi but in all honesty she is the ship, you cant even take her farther than some distance away from the Normandy (not sure how far?) which makes it impractical. and you already have tali as a tech expert. i think her character story/evolution is cool though and would definitely keep her in the game itself. and i would drop james just because he is/was a newbie and i actually did think when i started me3 "why do i get this guy when i have been pining for others?"
i would add shiala, falere (surviving daughter of samara), a salarian (and i say a salarian because i think it would be interesting to explore a completely new character of this species, see him/her develop as a person while you get to know the species a little bit better) and for the fourth...........conrad verner

I actually embrace EDI having a mobile mech that can serve as a squad member, but I also enjoy EDI acting like Jarvis did for Tony Stark as well, so I'm a bit torn on that issue. I could never drop James now that I've gotten used to the character. The Normandy needs someone focused on drinking Mezcal, playing cards and kicking asses.
I liked her as "Jarvis" too. She comes off more smug or something.. more remote with her wit.
I've gotten used to James, but he just seems so redundant and unnecessary. Both class wise and character wise. And what unique-ness he does bring isn't all that unique either. The game could have used a tough marine like him long ago, but do we really need it..now of all times?

All in all I'd say that EDI would be the one I'd drop, since her character is intact whether or not she's a mech.
That's why I would drop her, too. She was my Jarvis, It was like talking to the Normandy itself.

Eh, I liked having him around regardless. Thing is, I find that he's one of the only characters in the ship that actually stays more upbeat through it all, and I enjoy his buddy duo relationship with Cortez. As for redundancy, that really depends on what you are and who survives. With Ashley gone in my main playthrough, the only other character that comes closest to a pure soldier type is my Vanguard. Garrus is almost there, but his talent set puts him between Infiltrator and Engineer.

Yeah, he doesn't do anything bad. And he does cheer things up a bit. It just doesn't sit well with me when there are so many established characters already. It will always remain a "damn shame" to me. ME2 ends on a great note with your suicide squad giving you nods and stuff, like you've built up some bond with them -- and then they amount to jack sh!t in ME3. Any new character that takes their slots gets my resentment.. no matter how harmless they are in their own right (like James).

There's just so many characters. Much as I enjoy them, they're quite a lot to juggle together.
It's a failure of the medium, I guess. It's kind of sad if it's hard to juggle in this context, but yet, easily pulled off in tv shows and books (there are lots of ensemble stories with a sense of continuity). I want games to show that they can do everything other mediums can do -- and better. And yet it falls short here.

i think that's because video games are moe akin to movies than to books or tv. With a tv show at least, you (usually) get at least one full season of a show to establish characters, open and close story arcs and etc, as well as the (hopefully) time to finish what you started in later seasons. books are the same way, but require a little more time to develop.
a movie or a game though, doesn't have that luxury. either you're hooked on these characters now or you won't be getting or seeing the next installment. I feel there is more immediacey to the project.

Ashley constantly thinks im still with Cerberus even when I clearly went against them time and time again.
Liara because I felt she was forced on the player. And no offence to Liara fans, she isn't the greatest squad mate either.
Add Kal'Reegar
Well, isn't it obvious that Kal'Reegar has the epic rocket launcher and is more of a soldier than Liara and EDI.

In the end, all decisions are arbitrary, but yes, I see what you mean. Liara is in the game a lot, and regardless of whether one believes it to be favoritism, it is focus. More focus is more to love. Or hate, as the case may be. Thanks to the shilling in Genesis, the ridiculous amount of focus, the haphazard character development, and the fact that she's a forced friend/lover, I hate her.

Maybe you're right.
That could be another thing rubbing me the wrong way. I don't like how movies handle characters as much as TV shows or books (when the shows or books are good at least). And something about ME makes me feel it's more suited to the show formula rather than film. I want to just settle in this world longer, see more adventures with all of these characters. Not say goodbye too quickly or move past their stories.
Instead it's more like Star Wars, where most characters get the Lando or Boba Fett treatment at best. By that I mean, lots of cool characters that you don't quite get enough of (while everything revolves around a core - Han/Leia/Luke/etc).
