Ridiculous.

There is some whining on the BSN about every character. But there's certainly much more revolving around Tali and Javik than Liara. Thankfully, this seems to be an isolated thing.

That reminds me. The post I just made is wrong. It's not as simple as that. There's another reason, I believe. That people on the BSN whine about Liara as a little act of 'rebellion' against the writers. They perceive her to be a 'favored' character, so some people proclaim how much they hate her in a childish and foolish attempt to 'get back at them.'

I don't know if it goes any deeper for most than just being sour grapes over their particular favorite LI getting less screen time. Liara gets more dialogue than any other ME3 LI except Garrus, and Garrus tends to get a pass because most fans rolled with Bioware defining him as Shep's canon bro.

That isn't to say that there aren't other reasons people might not like Liara, just that its the biggest source of complaints. Back when pre-DLC Mass Effect 2 was out, most of the character-bashing threads were directed at Miranda and Tali. Back then Liara complaint threads were about her lack of content, rather having too much of it. That didn't change until LotSB.

Given the previous link between screen time and the number and frequency of character-bashing threads, IMO whichever LI Bioware wrote the most content for was also going to generate the most complaints, except Garrus. For whatever reason he is a special snowflake that fans griping about 'forced' or favored characters tend to hand waive.

Garrus annoys me too, even if I like him. He has even more lines than Liara - and much of it is just variations of the same thing. You can click him 3 or 4 times after each mission, and he'll mostly make the same statements, but in different ways. I think it's a waste. I like talking to him, but he doesn't need that much. They talk about how "word budget" was a big priority, but they didn't spread it around to different characters enough.

edit: Same goes for how Javik is written too.

People removed:
EDI - Not the entire character, just the robot body. Everthing else is fine.
Liara - Remove her from the squad, but not necessarily the Normandy. Maybe put a stronger emphasis on her information network.

And who get's added:
Either Bray or Balak - About goddamn time we get a batarian squaddie. Bray would probably be amiable enough, while Balak would constantly butt heads with Shep.
Kal'Reegar - I don't really need to explain this one, do I?
Either Kirrahe or his replacement - After Mordin, the squad just doesn't feel complete without a salarian.
A geth - This character only joins if we got geth-quarian peace of the geth won. Maybe a sniper? You can either let it choose it's own name or offer one (which it will accept).

i chose to to make it nine for this topic because I love the numbers nine and ten (9 if you don't count Shepard ten if you do.

I don't need 9-10

First off Garrus and Tali are dead in ME3. I'd put EDI back in her box and jettison the sexbot. Liara stays on board permanently as SB. Don't need or like Meathead so he gets sent back to Earth once we hit the Citadel. I'd ground Cortez (let him grieve somewhere else) and get him off my ship ASAP. I'd get Lilihierax as my Shuttle Mechanic to replace Cortez. The VS gets sent back to Hackett.

My ME3 Squad:

Captain Maeko Matsuo - Replaces Meathead
Seryna - Fills in as shuttle pilot
Salkie - Fills in for dead Garrus
Javik - He is the best of the ME3 bunch

That's all the squad I'd need to get the job done.

hah, i disliked Liara before it was cool.
Honestly, in ME1 she kind of annoyed me as a teammate , but I was okay with her as a person.  I just didn't see why she was on the squad , any more than joker or Chakwas.
In me2 her character made me mad, but it is mixed as she is the reason Shepard is alive (but in a way finding that out also creeped me out a bit)
in ME3 she really began to feel needy and forced, which is when I really stopped liking her character at all. My opinion of course, and maybe it is bias but I don't know. They really push Asari Love (paragon lost)
which I never understood. It's the hair really. Or lack of it. Plus tentacles plus the culture I don't like much, and can't trust their politicians or Samara.

i was just not born to like the Adari unfortunatly.

I disliked Liara long before LotSB. I was ambivalent to her and mostly ignored her until I saw the Genesis comment, where I first became annoyed. I didn't "gain a respect for the asari' because of her mindmeld thing, nor did I find Liara beautiful, nor did I bring her to Noveria. LotSB and ME3 just made me hate her more because of the forced friend aspect.

I agree with all you posted.

In ME1, after saving her, I went to do another mission and lo and behold there she is with armor and a weapon. A squadmate. I didn't have any say in the matter. I thought if she can be a squadmate than anyone can be a squadmate.
Since that playthrough I always rescue her after Virmire and everything else is done to limit the time I have to hear/see her.

When you first meet her on Illum you get the "what-the-crap" hug. I had femshep go back to the Normandy to be checked for fleas and to take a shower.

The shadow busted dlc made want to break my TV since I wasn't able to question her about giving my body to Cerberus. The worse part is if you bring her up to the Normandy she mentions her birthday coming up. I didn't like Shepard responding about getting her a gift but what was bad is her replying that she has everything she wants...you. To bad Javik wasn't in ME2. I would call him up to throw her out the airlock. Of course I don't invite her to the Normandy at all if I play the dlc. Also the story about how the dogtags came to be in her hands was hard to believe.

In ME3 there are 3 instances where she didn't have to be. After talking with Hackett about Mars, the dialogue between Shepard and Liara was unnecessary. It was just a lot of nothing. Wasteful.

The next is after the first dream where she mentions the Turian councillor not giving help. We already knew that. Why do we need to hear it again from her?

The third time is after the second dream. Is there a reason why she couldn't use the intercom? Or what's wrong with Traynor or the robot telling us. They would use the intercom.

Why does everyone want Balak. If you want a batarian, take Bray. Balak's an ass. Bray is cool.

I concur, he sends you message after Omega telling you to rest assured that there is at least One Batarian in the galaxy that doesn't want you dead. Plus, at the beginning, he wanted your autograph...

Why everyone hates Liara?

Liara's a beast on combat, infinite combos with her on every single game of the series, feel sad when she wasn't a squadmate on me2 but she saved shepard's body and LotSB was amazing.

I wouldn't remove anyone they can be used in multiple combat combos, I'll add Shiala, Jona Sederis, spare Tela Vasir's life in order to join me.

I'm glad you felt sad. A rare thing. You should count yourself lucky. Hell, I'm jealous of Liara fans. She gets a lot of screentime and she's very central to most plots. If I was a big fan, I'd be happy if I were you.

On Normal and higher, banshees will insta-kill just about any of your squad if you don't direct them to keep their distance. Garrus is surprisingly squishy for what he is. In any case, the banshees are kind of a special case since they're one of the only enemies, other than the Atlas and Shepard clone that have both barrier or shields over armor, so even when the barrier's brought down, certain powers are not nearly as effective because of the latter.

That was meant to be humorous, not to be taken (completely) serious.

But you are right, I saw Garrus get himself run through by a Phantom on the Citadel, twice.

On Normal or higher in the Monastery I run like a little b**ch and hide, cloak and fire the Harrier with AP rounds. Bye bye. Screw the burst fire. The cloak bonus lasts the entire clip. I go through more medi-gel rezing the squad and using them for cannon fodder.

Should be fun to see but that happen with just about every squadmate in the game since the AI is crappy at all, this is why I change my 6th mouse button to rally squad so I just keep it spamming all the time, gotta love the squad responses to the hail and they always stay at my back waiting my command to warp, stasis, area throw or detonate some combos, ashley + Liara are my favorite squad members, insanity is really easy on ME 3 can't say the same on ME2 neither ME 1

This is why I love Liara on ME1 overall her biotics powers wich are overpowered on ME1 she had electronics! Unleash some overloads on geth armature then send them to fly with lift so I take the shot with assasinate, very fun to go down of the mako on Virmire and take down all the geth on foot.

I said I'm jealous. Not necessarily hate her.  I wish other characters could be as involved. With a squad of potentially 20 or so, I could do with more involvement and activity spread out. Not necessarily to all 20, but at least more than Liara and Garrus. I don't like playing a game that feels specifically tailored for particular fanbases. The series was doing fine when it tried to be cool for everyone, and they didn't know the particular "needs" of their fans as much.

I had Liara suspend geth armatures left and right in lift while I took them out at my leisure. She was easily my favorite in ME1 along with Kaidan.
