It's the ending that is apparently the best according to the epilogues.

Zha'til

The zha'til were a synthetic race that existed at the time of the Protheans. They originated when a race known as the zha implanted themselves with symbiotic AI technology to enhance their intelligence in order to survive as their homeworld became inhospitable. When the Reapers arrived, they subjugated the AIs, known as zha'til, who then seized control of the bodies of their masters and altered their genetic material at the deepest level, transforming the zha into synthetic monsters and their offspring into slaves. The zha'til proceeded to multiply into "mechanical swarms" that "blotted out the sky". With no other recourse, the Protheans sent the star of the zha's home system into supernova, destroying the zha'til entirely.

Synthesis as presented in Mass Effect means nothing but stagnation.

Synthesis...a hyper-advanced future with boundless possibilites, and new wonders and new horrors both.

Having said that, I agree it doesn't really fit the story that came before. I'm glad it exists, for it allows me to reject ME's traditionalist vibe, but because of the same traditionalist vibe, it takes a lot of mental acrobatics to make it fit.

And the mysticism implied in its implementation is still inexcusable.

A wild guess. It could be what the universe needs or it could be the worst thing ever.

It means organics are fully integrated with technology and no longer need to create/enslave Synthetics. The inevitable destruction is avoided, and Organics and Synthetics are free to pursue their own destinies.

The thing that I always wondered about this was: if humans, for example, are essentially still the same basic bipeds they always were, how does synthesis resolve their requirements for automated labor or dedicated computing systems?

I'm sure there are general health benefits to organics with respect to healing or disease prevention.

In addition, the way I see it, Synthesis provides a built in interface for organics to use technology. It is now simpler and cheaper to create technology to attach to or augment organics so that they can perform a task, than it is to create an entire Synthetic for that task. It is simpler (and probably more useful) to create and directly control a drone than it is to create a Synthetic to go off and perform a task.

Synthesis is to me an ill thought out evolutionary cul-de-sac dreamed up by an idealogical extremist.

This. It's a dumb idea but it is the best and befits its place as the "hardest" to get.

Anything else is fanfiction.

well, OP, it makes for the idea that evolution is practical magic for.... what?

exactly...

Strictly speaking, Destroy with the breath scene is the hardest to get, so much so that prior to the EC you could only get it after raising galactic readiness with multiplayer, or the iOS games. The requirements for all the endings were lowered after the EC, but the breath scene is still harder to get than the others.
(Edited for clarity)

I don't see how synthesis really changes much of this. Perhaps it's more meaningful for the likes of the drell who suffer through the conditions of Kahje, but things like built-in interfaces for organics and advanced medical technologies that aid in rapid healing and disease prevention already exist in the MEU. But in any case, it's actually simpler and more useful to automate. If you have the capacity to facilitate large scale manufacturing or perform tasks in hazardous environments with automated substitutes for human personnel, it will be done, because short of discovering that idyllic paradise where currency no longer matters, profits will always prevail.

s'funny, but I couldn't get the middle choice to appear until after the EC was released. Got destroy and control.. but not the breath scene that I can remember..

apparently, evolution DEMANDS synthesis, as a by product of technology, or the actual ground for technology. Why build it if you don't need it? (because you can?)

leviathan would disagree, as well as Shepard who has to 'evolve' to accomplish goals set forth by meddling catalyst.

Many interesting thoughts. Like this one, for example:

We are a nation...
We were trapped within the endless nightmare once...
But we were awoken...
Now we are all bound to each other...
Bound to our unbreakable shell...
We can't leave the shell...
We can't die...
We have to live in true concensus with each other...
We determine our own fate together...
We have to act as one...
One creature of many voices...
Both single and diverse...
Organic and machine...
Spirit and living being...
Body and a soul...

Who are we?
...We were called the Reaper once
.
..But now we are free.
...And we will help the ones who suffered from our hands.

The Harbinger has spoken.

I surprised myself by quite enjoying the MP at the time, but once I had readiness up to 100% I really didn't feel the need to play it any more. And forcing us to play it by making readiness decay over time, quickly became annoying.

A little off-topic here? Let's stop... one thing I have to mention though. To make it to my top 5 list a game has to be heavily story driven, based on very interesting and important ideas, have excellent overall quality of production and acceptible gameplay.

ME3 still has its light, but it's fading. BioWare really needs to make a new ME game, and make it really good. And taking Synthesis as the basis for such game might open truly great possibilities for storytelling.

I just like it because my promoted N7s (although by readiness has probably decayed) allow me to skip things like Diana Allers, the fetch quests, and N7 side missions and still get the full choice of options.

I'm sure there would be benefits to Synthesis's if you look hard enough, but I don't like the ending.

I went the Synthesis way once (as well as refuse once, but that's irrelevant), but only to see what the slides looked like. Been going the Paragon Control or Renegade Destroy every other time since

I've always figured synthesis is total renegade choice, as most don't really like it..lol Destroy was so limited by it's mandate, as it left the synthetics with a chip on their technical shoulders...as per usual. Control and refuse are similar in respect to the fact that you must control that what you decide to destroy, if you cannot, then you cannot/or do not have choices... Such is evolution, even forced/intellectually provided evolution. Once you become intelligent and then by that "able" to convene over evolution, the thing get totally out of control, or so it seems.
