I want a little segment where the translator breaks and you get to hear what everyone's actually saying. Maybe some of the races speak in a different tone that humans can't understand so they end up actually sounding totally different!

I bet either turians or asari would sound the freakiest.

I think they either need to stay completely away from it or go all the way. If they do something in-between it might be too distracting and confusing. Personally, I'm fine with the way things are; if they begin highlighting the fact that translators are used, it calls attention to the fact that you don't hear their own native language and their lip movements conform to the English translation. There can be no reasonable explanation for at least the latter.
If they decided to cross this bridge, they'd have to create separate languages for each race, or at least for each race represented in your list of companions. Perhaps you'd hear them speak in their native tongue and then it would be translated with a moment's delay (the translator can't read their minds and know what they're about to say, so it can't be instantaneou). Perhaps it would drown out the alien speech, allowing it to only be vaguely heard in the background of the English string of words. I don't know. The question is, though, is it really worth the effort?

It's something you have to turn a blind eye to, but I think it works just fine the way it is. Any translator malfunctions as you suggest and it would just become much harder to ignore. We could call it the "Tali-face factor" :-P meaning it's a dangerous (and arguably unnecessary) area to explore.

I would be all for this if it was done well, with lots of thought put into the sounds/words and a meaningful explanation of how it was all working.

That said, I don't think it'd ever be worth the effort they'd have to invest to do it well, and so it probably is best left as a "just go with it" trope of ME's genre, as they have so far, with occasional nods to translators existing when it's convenient and relevant. With something like this, there's much more room for error than success.
