I am playing DA origins and  trying to make a reasonable Drizzt character with poor results.
Inevitably I end up with what looks like a white guy with face paint and
a bad rug on top. He needs some "toughness"

I have messed around
with some of the mods and found that to be more trouble than it's
worth. Has anyone made a decent character with just the generic
character creator?

The problem with non-modded dark skin tones is they really really suck, like blotchy ugly looking suck. You would need mods just to get something resembling a drow elf that doesn't look absolutely hideous.  I've seen some mods that offer up drow looking elves.  And there's no really good 'white' hair color without a mod.

drow specific skin tone:

hair and skin tones:

hair, skin and tattoo colors:

I'd recommend this one just for the tattoo colors alone as it really makes them 'pop' and look more vibrant on the skin.

The easiest way to use these is with a chargenmorph compiler, but I actually prefer just manually entering the information on the chargen, as I am not computer savvy.

Thanks, but after several tries I actually have one I am satisfied with!
