Usually I'm the latter.

I'm such a party snob that I create a private party, then invite no one in so I can take solace of the silence.

I usually leave my mic unplugged but will plug it in at times if team mates are chatty.

My mic is usually on, but muted and I use the Mass Effect 3 text chat on PS3 instead.

I've never understood why people feel the need to talk to each other over microphones while playing a video game. Complete strangers who don't know each other and who have never met in real life...it's very odd. I only do it because it would be rude to keep rejecting invites from people on my friends list, but I'd never send a party invite myself or put on my mic...unless I need to swear at someone or insult them in retaliation.

It's a really strange culture that exists among console gamers. I'll never understand it. Whatever happened to just sitting back, relaxing and playing some games in your spare time? Why is there so much emphasis on talking to complete strangers in different continents while you play?

Well. It usually means better teamwork and faster completion times...
I shudder at the thought of organizing a 40 man raid in vanilla WoW without voice comm.

My mic hasn't worked in MP since it began, so it's sort of a non-issue for moi.

What I find particularly interesting is back around the time I was aiming for BOTB I'd get random friend requests from people I'd played with, all without being able to talk to them. Just purely for working well together. Always found that intriguing.

Edit: OT I usually end up in a party, but if not I will listen and see if the people sound like they are worth talking to.  Xbox people definitely need to be screened.

No...huge emphasis on the following things:

1) Complete strangers;
2) Living in different continents;
3) Talking over a gaming console (i.e. not real life...just like BSN).

I'm usually in a party, but if we see someone talking we sometimes go to game chat.

I'm a stuck up party snob.

Don't know why... Just don't bother looking for a mic and plugging it. Now, if there was such a feature as Text Chat, like SWTOR, then I speak with other players... Not in the mic!

Also, 2 stars on this thread? BSN please

So.....explain to me one more time why you are posting things on the internet if points 1,2,3 are indeed valid, and your claim doesn't actually just boil down to the above abbreviated statement of yours?

Neither. I'm not much of a talker, so no mic for me. I'm listening to music anyways.

Party snob mostly. Even though I feel it's a shame in a way since had so many interesting/fun/ridiculous conversations in game chat on PS3. On Xbox tend to stick with friends and pugs are just silent pugs.. Also big parties with several on going games at the same time are headache inducing.

Hm. Will be trying to get people to use game chat with me.

Edit: But I would denifnitely not be playing this game still if I didn't use a mic. Sooo many laughs. And party chat is an awesome feature (PS3 pls).

I usually party chat only, but I don't have a problem game chatting when the lobby is of intelligence. If I come in and hear a bunch of loud music and other nonsense, I'll mute my mic and just play in silence. If they're talking about the game itself, or if someone addresses me directly I'd happily talk about whatever's on the menu as long as it's not something stupid.

TL;DR version = Neither? Kinda both? Situational? Occasional?

I'm usually on @ night when the kids (parrots) are sleeping behind me and gf is right next door in the bedroom sleeping so I really am more of I cant even mic up to answer. I guess if the person(s) are pretty mellow down to earth just playing the game and what have you and its a rare op that I get to be on much earlier I might plug up. Use to mic up alot more @ game release... I use to mic up alot more at games release to talk/learn/warn etc but since solos and all, communication isnt 'important' for me (not for the soloer either i guess) but i use it on occasion.  Even in a full group 4 friends I may be the only micless?  ;)

It's not that strange.

On certain games, such as this, then yes. Most players you find are just random players you'll likely never to hear from again.

In other games, such as Counter-Strike or Team Fortress, some players find it comfort in finding a server they frequently play on. With time, you get to know the regulars there and often mess around. At that moment, the game becomes a little more enjoyable. Oh, and the creepy and funny things you hear on a regular server is pretty funny too.

But in the context of Mass Effect, it's a little more understable not to talk to players. I often play on my own.

Party snob 100% B)
Seriously, I probably wouldn't be playing this game if it wasn't for talking to interesting people. It can get so repetitive sometimes that it's nice to talk about something that has nothing to do with the game with interesting people. When (and if) I pug, I have no mic and I'm usually listening to music.
What I'm trying to say is that this game can get very boring sometimes, unless you're playing with people you like.

You can't compare talking on a microphone to writing comments on an interent forum. This is different...it's not the same as having a dialogue or conversation with someone. I'm not communicating or interacting with people when I post here, I'm simply contributing to an electronic forum. You write something, you place your mark on that thread, and then you simply just shut your computer.

Real life interactions are built on two essential components: being face to face with someone, and the actual talking part. The absence of either one of those renders the interaction virtual or electronic. That is to say, it is not a real life interaction.

In real life, or on an electronic forum/gaming device? Because those two things are worlds apart.
