TL;DR

I have difficulty making friends.

In real life, or on an electronic forum/gaming device? Because those two things are worlds apart.

Actually, I've noticed that if you are sociable and happy to talk to randoms in real life, you tend to make friends much easier on Xbox. BSN is actually harder for me to make friends, simply because I'm such an internet newbie and it took me months just to learn how to post gifs or post on other peoples comments.
But you're English, haven't you ever been out and got smashed? :P

You tend to meet a lot of different people, like friends of friends, in other words, randoms. It's kind of similar on the internet, just no face to face contact and to be honest, do you really care about that so much?

If I can interpret your bizarre language, I am like the party snob in that I am on TeamSpeak for voice.

Neither. I'm not much of a talker, so no mic for me. I'm listening to music anyways.

This.

Used to talk a bit with players on the FL and also saying thank you to pugs for revive for example, but wearing a mic on headphones is uncomfortable so I don't have it plugged in anymore.

Also like to have music playing in the background.

TL;DR version = Neither? Kinda both? Situational? Occasional?

I'm usually on @ night when the kids (parrots) are sleeping behind me and gf is right next door in the bedroom sleeping so I really am more of I cant even mic up to answer. I guess if the person(s) are pretty mellow down to earth just playing the game and what have you and its a rare op that I get to be on much earlier I might plug up. Use to mic up alot more @ game release... I use to mic up alot more at games release to talk/learn/warn etc but since solos and all, communication isnt 'important' for me (not for the soloer either i guess) but i use it on occasion.  Even in a full group 4 friends I may be the only micless?  ;)

Parrots pet name for kids or kids pet name for parrots? Honestly wondering because my kids scream out ME3 quotes like BIG MACHINE, TAKING CASUALITIES and crap all the time. A parrot screaming some of this crap would just be too damn hilarious.:D

I've never understood why people feel the need to talk to each other over microphones while playing a video game. Complete strangers who don't know each other and who have never met in real life...it's very odd. I only do it because it would be rude to keep rejecting invites from people on my friends list, but I'd never send a party invite myself or put on my mic...unless I need to swear at someone or insult them in retaliation.

It's a really strange culture that exists among console gamers. I'll never understand it. Whatever happened to just sitting back, relaxing and playing some games in your spare time? Why is there so much emphasis on talking to complete strangers in different continents while you play?

There is literally no way I can respond to this. You are an idiot.

Usually in a party, but if the pug happens to be chatty we will sometimes invite them to the party.

Since my PC is wired through to my hi-fi I tend to get horrendous feedback when listening to music if I leave my mic on, so it's generally switched off - turn the hi-fi off and use headphones when playing ME (since the mic's part of the headset) but there's no guarantee I'll remember to switch the mic on of course ;)

Unless I'm talking to friends that are in a separate lobby or different game, I much prefer game chat.

Largely because certain people including myself tend to barge into open parties and distract everyone with obnoxious behaviour, or even flirting.

Oddly I occasionally get chatting to random people on PC... then we tend to add each other to friends lists (on Origin and occasionally Steam or Skype) then play other games together and generally just talk crap... and it's kinda nice, so there :P

Even done the odd swapsy on Steam duplicate games, so each of us has gotten free games out of it - can't be bad, surely?

I don't game chat. Ever. The fact that I end up despising 99% of the people I meet on Xbox Live (and the Internet in general) is the driving force behind that. As this related to Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, I'm not a big fan of listening to some turbo nerd yammer in my ear about why my guns/equipment don't synergize with my character, and/or why I didn't "spec" my character the way I "should".

I've always preferred gamechat, but most of my friends insist on party chat. When we're spread across multiple games, I'll usually just listen.

Seriously, I probably wouldn't be playing this game if it wasn't for talking to interesting people. It can get so repetitive sometimes that it's nice to talk about something that has nothing to do with the game with interesting people. When (and if) I pug, I have no mic and I'm usually listening to music.
What I'm trying to say is that this game can get very boring sometimes, unless you're playing with people you like.

I will have a chat when playing with people from my friends list . I enjoy a bit of light hearted banter during the game with these players.

Most people in the business world are constantly chatting to "strangers" over the phone so it is not "weird" that people are comfortable chatting to people they have never met in a game.

In PUGS it is usually a thank you for a revive and thats pretty much it . In the PUG s where I end up chatting to another player they will usually end up on my friends list - because they are fun to play with.

On topic... I do both. I'll be in a party or switch to game chat if I see someone talking. I'm quite sociable.

And there's the prototype party snob.  Getting this guy to talk in-game is nearly impossible.  Party chat can help timid, shy people like Reks here learn to speak in a social setting without the pressure of face-to-face conversation.

I don't see what is the big deal about talking to strangers. I don't always throw the headset on, but when I see people talking in game chat, I usually join in. Sometimes people are weird dicks, I guess, but more often than not, chatting with other players makes the experience more fun.

Sometimes, you just don't want to be bothered; I can dig that. Lotta times I get that way. But I don't see anything inherently wrong with being willing to talk to a stranger in a game chat.

Different cultures I guess,
What continent do you live on XFG?
From personal experience
In Canada talking to strangers about current topics like the weather or some local event isn't particularly unusual, so talking to random people in video games is pretty natural
whereas in Europe it seems like everybody just despises the idea of talking to somebody they don't know,

I don't go out of my way to talk to people usually, but am not opposed to it

Revving you, eh?  Never had a pug do that.  Sounds like an Asari thing.
