In English culture, people are pretty reluctant to talk to strangers, so it probably reflects this in the game world. Thankfully, I feel more Spanish and I tend to not STFU!MGW7 wrote...

In Canada talking to strangers about current topics like the weather or some local event isn't particularly unusual, so talking to random people in video games is pretty natural

I don't go out of my way to talk to people usually, but am not opposed to it

Well, it's not so much a cultural issue...the thing I find odd is how people have turned gaming into a medium for 'social' interaction. There's nothing wrong with striking up a conversation with a stranger you meet in real life (under the right circumstances, of course), I wouldn't consider that weird at all, I do it quite often. But in the world of online gaming, I don't feel it's appropriate. It's not really a place for people to talk or to socialise. You're playing a game by yourself on an electronic device, it seems hardly appropriate to mix that with conversations with strangers. For me, video games are just a hobby, something that you can do in your spare time, something fun and relaxing.

No...huge emphasis on the following things:
1) Complete strangers;
2) Living in different continents;
3) Talking over a gaming console (i.e. not real life...just like BSN).
Okay, I gotta ask... why is it such a bad thing to talk to somebody you don't know? I swear, society has put such a taboo on interacting with the people you're around that it's just insane. When you're young it makes sense. When you're older it's just stupid.
What's the point of all of us being on the same earth if we're just gonna ignore each other?

It's not a bad thing, not at all. You may have misunderstood my point. I talk to people over the mic all the time, but only because common courtesy dictates that I should do that. When someone sends you a party chat invite, it would be impolite not to accept, so I just go ahead and reluctantly put my mic on. It feels very unnatural, uncomfortable and forced. The problem here is not that you're talking to strangers (like I pointed out in my previous comment, under the right circumstances it's absolutely fine to talk to a stranger you might meet in real life). It's that you're talking over a microphone through your gaming console to people in different continents while playing a game...now that's what I find really odd.
Like I said, I do participate in that myself. But I'm a firm believer in all things real (that includes real life, face to face interactions), I hold such things in very high regard, nothing can or will ever replace that. Talking to your gaming buddies through a microphone just seems really odd, unnatural, forced, inappropriate and unnecessary to me. Gaming is a solitary hobby for me. When I'm done playing, then I'm free to chat to the people I know, friends and family...face to face...in real life! I hope I have made my point clear.

Still do not understand what is "inappropriate " about chatting to other players in a multi-player game but I do understand that some people don't feel comfortable in this environment and would rather not talk

This might sound sarcastic and hostile, and to a certain extent it surely is, but try to see past that.
...you're saying this on the internet. About a fictional game!
I've gamed with friends/roommates for about 15 years now, and particularly when we were all heavily into WoWArena, but even in ME3MP, we'd be on mic's/skype rather than just having our doors open.
I get not wanting to talk, but your justification (Which in my opinion isn't needed in the first place) is just getting odder and and less logically as you go.
You post on BSN quite frequently, which by your running theme of "real"... well, it isn't. (I disagree on such terminology but my grip on reality has always been tenuous as best.)
XFG-65 wrote...

Not really. No...
For me, even if my mic worked (lolpc) I probably wouldn't bother, my reasoning for this is simple. When I play ME3MP I listen to music 100% of the time now. It goes hand in hand, particular songs and beats actually have a driving effect on my playstyle which I quite enjoy.
Trying to justify a desire to not communicate with people on a basis of superiority derived from the notion that real world interations are superior to ones conducted over a microphone/game just doesn't hold any ground. Doing so on a forum on the internet is borderline hypocrisy.

I just want to address this part...it's exactly the same for me, I listen to music at full blast on my loudspeakers, so a party invite means I have to switch off my system and engage in conversation, I'd much rather be listening to what I like to listen to while playing. It's a big part of the reason why I don't like talking while I play.

Like people have already said, the irony of posting in a forum full of strangers talking about how you only like interacting with people face to face should not be lost on you. Honestly, I'd much rather talk with people in person than over the internet and gaming has never been solitary for me. Did you never invite friends over to play games like Goldeneye or Mario kart in the past? I will always prefer those days to what we have now, but times have changed and you should probably change your way of thinking, because socialising on the internet is probably (and regrettably) the future.
Welcome to the 21st century!

Haha, I can see the irony, yes. I'm stuck in my ways (and, as always, presenting my opinions as facts). But honestly, I'm just telling it like I see it, it's just my point of view. Growing up, I was always playing my PS1 by myself in my room when all the cool kids would be outside playing footy, didn't ever play games with others. And I really like that solitary environment when I'm playing a game. It kinda gets ruined when you have to chat with the people you're playing with. But don't get me wrong, I really don't mind chatting to people at all, all of the people I play with are very nice and all that, and the conversations that take place are always relaxed and entertaining. But I like having the freedom to listen to music at full volume, or be able to take breaks without needing to excuse myself first, or whatever. Plus, I never have anything useful or interesting to say, it's best for everyone that I'm not heard speaking. So yeah, that's my angle. :happy: I've also noticed that I tend to make less mistakes when playing without a mic, it can get really frustrating when I'm constantly going down in the game while trying to focus on the conversation I'm having with others. But that could just be an excuse, I'm not sure.

It's a really strange culture that exists among console gamers. I'll never understand it. Whatever happened to just sitting back, relaxing and playing some games in your spare time? Why is there so much emphasis on talking to complete strangers in different continents while you play?
Well. It usually means better teamwork and faster completion times...
I shudder at the thought of organizing a 40 man raid in vanilla WoW without voice comm.
72(later 54) person raids in EQ without voicechat all day long
p.s. usually party snob, but if my friends aren't on I have no problem talking in pugs.

It's almost like everyone abandoned me in prefrence to the new faster broader newer option.
I understand the world needs to move forward... but I run too slow to keep up with data of today.

There is literally no way I can respond to this.You are an idiot.
Yet you did anyway.
A response implies an impending debate or discussion. I will do neither.
