Killzone: Shadow Fall... Wow, the first next-gen game has set really high standards of quality.

Innovation in what way?Darth Brotarian wrote...
God that would be horrible, innovation in an entire field just ceasing to move forward.

Stylized works are always welcomed and might end up being the future, but I'd like there to still be some way to push the envelope when it comes to how nice a game can look while still giving players lots of control over them.

Graphical advancement isn't the "innovation" I'm looking for when it comes to vieo games. As much as I appreciate a good-looking game I'm not invested in consoles because of some eventual improvements of the bells and whistles that have (so far) come with each new generation. I thought last gen was good enough to be done with it. This gen definitely looks good enough to be done with it. I'm not looking to see the graphical plateau. Putting the absence of 'mind blowing" aside, the time seems long past where graphical improvements brings with it revolutionary gameplay design, whether that be because of limitations or improvements. Mario can't move dimensions and Metal Gear can't be turned into a stealth game. That next graphical leap is monotonous, unless it's bringing with it easier design techniques. And even then, that next graphical leap is a bit dangerous. Games aren't getting any cheaper to make, although the blame for that lies with publishers as well as all this new tech.Darth Brotarian wrote...
Finding a way to squeeze more processing power into the graphics so they have high budget CGI movie quality, but with players being in control of the actions of the characters. Story comes first and stuff, but I'd still like people to come up with new shortcuts and techniques to make them able to breakthrough or at the very least work around limits to graphics.

TL;DR
I'd rather this industry work on improving game design of what it can work with now than wait to throw a prettier Battlefield, Call of Duty, or Metal Gear Solid up in my face. Hopefully they haven't hit a plateau where it matters. And if they have, find ways to mix thngs up to keep games interesting beyond 800,000,000 polygon character models.

As far as the Shadow Fall game in question, I've only seen the one trailer long ago and can't speak for the gameplay itself. It looked seriously damned good, I can say that much.
Not likely. Even gameplay-light games like Beyond: Two Souls(or whatever one you prefer) will still be a barrier for some. It's easier to absorb content than be provided(and move past) the obstacle of gameplay. It has little chance of happening in my eyes.Video Games will probably replace movies in the future.

I'm begning to wonder. Seems to me players these days and more demanding then ever, and generally expecting every game from any genre to be made for them and them alone....

Where as the ISA are so crap, particularly Rico I want to make bite the kerb.
KZ Shadow Fall could have been really something in terms of plot as the universe is quite good, the Helgast are great as a faction and more sympathetic that the supposed protagonists, but they threw it all away for CoD style 'murica **** yeah.
It's not as if playing as the Helgast would have confused anyone, old players know all the back story and new players aren't going to be confused by playing a faction in a game they've never played before.

Is it me or is Scolar Visari a great character? Actually most of the Helgast like Col. Radeck are pretty good, with the exception of KZ3 where Stahl turned into an egomaniacal maniac.

Visari and Radecks deaths (even though I knew they were both inevitable) made me kinda sad
And you're right about the Helghast being a lot more sympathetic than the US- I mean ISA! I'd kill for a campaign from the Helghast point of view but sadly that will probably never happen.

The way people respond to Seival with such fervor reminds me of the discussions people used to have with Borschtbeet/Busomjack. He was much funnier than Seival though.
The negativity and fervor of the responce from people who "play" games mostly on youtube and consider ME3 as "an example of bad writing" was quite predictible.
I know you people think that "grass was always greener back in old days". But the point is that modern game development doesn't care about such thoughts. It's moving forwards, and evolve to please the majority of players. Stagnating angry and very vocal minority is not the target audience, and so its opinion isn't really important.

Well it's an improvement over KZ3 but that's not saying much, and the plot still makes no sense, the ISA gives half of the planet to the Helghans and just sit back and watch while their citizens on that half are slaughtered?
The plot might have no sense in the context of previous games. But it has a lot of sense as standalone product. I never was a fan of Killzone series in general, but I'm a fan of Killzone: Shadow Fall (mostly because of it's story, and of course because of the great visual/sound parts).

What about call of duty 4? Or bioshock infinite? Or halo?
CoD 4's story was crap, same as usual, evil Russians, Chinese, Araba, flavour of the month invades US. Threatens world with Nukes, lazor beams, giant marshmallows on sticks etc. 'murica and co save the world.
Halo is largely over rated, it peaked at Halo 2 where we got to see the innner workings and polticking of the Covenant's inner factionalism and schisim in ideology. Halo 3 was meh, after that it was largely trash. I don't expect anything from 343 studios in that regard.
Bioshock is weird, it's clearly got FPS mechanics, but the developer gave us Bioshock 1 and 2, so they clearly know how to create an interesting story and universe like Rapture, Columbia etc. I like the characters although Comstock was rather, overt, in terms of their portrayal. Good portrayal of the Vox ie: they didn't white wash them and showed exactly what happens in revolutions without attempting to sanatise it. It's not the equivalent of the second coming in terms of games, but it's good, very good. I enjoyed it.
