Per the subject, is it possible to create a masking Visual Effect that will completely conceal a selectable object? As an example, a fake masonry wall visual effect that conceals an ordinary door. (Yes I know the mouse will still change shape.)
Hiding selectable objects behind a visual effect?

Yes, doing that would be no problem. You can even use vfx to create actual mirrors that reflect.
Use a billboard vfx and assign the masonry graphic you want to it. Then orient as desired.

Doors are trickier, but for usable placeables or containers you can turn their usability on or off via script. That even takes care of the cursor.
Another trick is to use a collision box/ball instead of a usable placeable. They don't highlight with the Z key, but the cursor will change if you mouse over them. I used them around peach trees and grape vines in Isle of Shrines for picking eatable fruit. The only way to find them is to explore with the cursor.

Placeable would work, too, right? Non-static, walkable, no collision.
