If you have the Steam version of the game you need to go into your Steam settings and turn off the in game overlay. For some reason ME hates any program that tries to run an overlay on top of it. This can include FRAPS too so if you have that running try turning it off.

ME also seems to hate some video players, so make sure you don't have those (e.g. PowerDVD) running. Sometimes they automatically load themselves into the background on startup.

Really...? I have both fraps and steam overlay and I dont drop below 60 fps much (sometimes in major battles and the like), but even at the worst its never unplayable. *shrug*

Yea...I have the steam version as well and I never disabled those, and never had a problem. Its not your specs either since I run this fine on a E6420, 2gigs of ram, and a 8600gt.

I had similar problems, but it went away with the newest patch from Nvidia. It seems that the one before just bugged ME out on my system.

Yea I don't think that ME reacts this way with every video card but it does with a few.  They aren't even necessarily low end cards but for some reason ME just doesn't play well with them.

I've had pretty much same problem, right after getting to the main screen with the planet in the background my FPS drop so low I cannot do anything. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling several times, dowloaded lastest NVIDIA drivers but no effect. computer specs are well above what is required, wonder if running dual monitors could be the problem, guess will have to disable the secondary and try it, really bummed I cannot get another play through in on ME1 before my ME2 comes in
