Obviously your character has to agree to Duncan's wishes to progress the game.:innocent:.
Obviously. Let's remove combat death too, since you have to kill all the enemies to progress the game.

You could probably help out the Mages in the war and maybe form an alliance with them. They help you investigate the veil tear and you help them fight against the Templars and Chantry. (Or Vice Versa with the Templars.)
But become their leader? This isn't Elder Scrolls.
Heh. As I recall, Skyrim didn't exactly handle that so well, either. Do a few sidequests and — BAM! — you're the leader of so and so faction. But the silliest parts? The fact that you could be the leader of multiple factions at once, and that NPCs rarely, if ever, mentioned the fact that, oh, hey, your PC is the leader of so and so faction.

I hate it when parents are causing unfair pressure on children like that. "You WILL become an inquisitor and you WILL save the world from cataclysmic events of the fade tear, or we will ground you and then disown you!"

Combat death is an antiquated gaming design and alternatives should be found to failing combat.

Zombification!
You play the rest of the game as a zombie with special abilities.

I'm not disagreeing necessarily, but like what?
If I kept waking up in a dungeon, for example, I'd be more likely to sigh and load to exactly where I would have loaded if I'd died and retry the battle.
And stuff like losing levels, xp or equipment has to have a fairly strict context, I think.

Then there wouldn't be a game.
Sure there would. You just start over, or reload.
I'm just saying a death scene would have been cool. I'm not going to touch the idea of wanting to play the game as a non-Warden, non-Inquisitor, or a Hawke who decided not to leave Ferelden after all. That wouldn't be 'no game', that'd be 'different game'.
What would have been the point.Obviously your character has to agree to Duncan's wishes to progress the game.:innocent:.
There was a bit in The Witcher 2 where you either anger Iorveth or refuse to go along with him and an archer shoots you dead.
At first I was like, "great, now I have to reload," but then I think I ended up appreciating those moments.
It's like in Gone Home. Well. I can't explain without spoilers, but I thought there was a really obvious alternate way to end that game that the devs didn't provide.
Gone Home was a game?

So many current battles are pointless filler anyway. Being forced to flee them (let's say - forcing you to a last "waypoint") would be punishment enough.
Is it just a modification of death? Oh, absolutely. However - I feel making the "Retreat" take the place of death creates a story element - death abruptly halts the story.
If you're forced to retreat - you can maintain the illusion of a real story. Death requires a person to say: "All of that never happened."
===
However, I think a few battles should have "Failure" built in as a mechanic.
Let's say there's a "Boss" type - and you could stop him at Points A, B or C.
You fail at point A - and he goes on to B and is more powerful. Or he escapes to point C where he enacts his plan and you fail to stop the event (let's say - the slaughtering of some mages).
Again - of course you can just reload it. And those who prefer to write their stories will be free to do so.
However - those who want to roleplay and weave a story out of their actions - can also do so.
====
Anyway - not perfect, it would all have to depend on the game - but that would be the basic premise.
Whatever it is - anything that gets away from the break in story that is: "Death"

That's not how Bioware games work. In DAO you had to be a Warden. You could not go on your own and do your own thing, expecting that to happen in DAI is just silly. If you don't want to be an Inquisitor, then don't play the game and go write some crappy power fantasty fan fiction.Lord Raijin wrote...

I think that would work for encounters here and there, totally. But there are a lot of battles in these games. And, lots of places where retreat doesn't really work.
But, yeah. Having quest failure in general is good, I reckon.

Well. I did read this as, "What is Gone Home?" and was about to link it.
In fact, I still will. http://store.steampo...com/app/232430/
I'm comfortable calling it a game. As are the people who gave it GOTYs, I guess.
