Basically, I almost only use Top Down Camera (Exploration Mode) when playing either NWN1 or NWN2. And when I asked the same question on a Japanese BBS, most people there were doing the same.
But when playing some user-made modules, I found that not small number of mod-builders are placing things and characters in places where I am hard to see if I am using top-down camera mode.
Is using Driving or Chase Camera mode popular?
Which Camera Mode do you use?

i hate playing nwn2 in character mode with a passion. not only does it look really bad, there's also none overview of what's happening. also micromanaging your group is a hassle while zoomed in.

I only ever use explorer. TAB (or is it Z?) to highlight things usually means I don't miss anything, but I don't usually play mods.

Z key is good. But in some modules, there are big tents or low-ceiling areas which are really hard to navigate in exploration mode.
Those ceilings does no become transparent even if "Ceiling Always Off" option is checked. So I must use first-person camera and keys to navigate, instead of clicking a point of floor.

Am I getting the terms wrong? I thought there were three modes, character, exploration, and strategy. Strategy is the top-down rts-looking one, which I never use. Character mode and exploration mode are both over-the-shoulder, but character mode locks the camera to your PC's facing while moving, while exploration mode keeps the camera pointing in the same direction until you move it yourself. Character mode also allows you to tilt the camera up, to see uphill or the ceiling, while exploration mode hides the ceilings by default.
For my play, I never use the strategy mode because it doesn't show you enough of the surrounding area, and it's too easy to lose track of where your PC is.
I usually keep it in exploration mode, but occasionally switch to character mode if I need to look up at something. I've also set the trees to non-fade on character mode for taking screenshots.

Err... you know you can actually MOVE the camera in exploration mode, right? So you can change to a low angle if you enter an area with a ceiling or whatever.

I only use exploration mode, but as Arkalezth pointed out you can zoom in or out (via the mouse wheel) or change the angle of the camera where necessary. I'm guessing that's how exploration mode got its name.

You can change to a low angle in exploration mode, but Lugaid is correct that you can't actually look UP. In character mode, you can. In places where there are steep hills to climb, I sometimes have to switch to character mode just to see where I'm going, because exploration mode doesn't zoom out far enough to show enough of the path above, and it can't angle toward the sky.
As for the terminology, Lugaid, of course those are the correct terms for this game, and I'm sure the OP is just using the terms for similar cameras from other games interchangeably with these modes' styles.

I use character mode most of the time, but a lot of the newer mods have areas you can't walk across in character mode & so you have to change to exploration, move a bit & then back to character mode.
It seems most of the newer mods are only tested in exploration mode.

I almost always use Character mode and all of the areas that I build are built with that mode used for testing, although I do also test the other modes. IMO however all modes of the camera in NWN2 are not done very well.
