Pet Dragon. Start from a Dragonling and have it grow from there. The Dragon can fly, giving it an added benefit over owning a Drake.

I figured because it takes a Dragon so long to mature into such a state and the flying thing, that it'd be easier to make a companion that stays on the ground, and lore wise only gets but so big. But maybe a Dragonling would be better, since they're about the size of Mabari anyway right? Do we know how long the story is suppose to span weeks? months? Years? I'd think if it was a female dragonling it'd take longer than the game will be playable before it becomes a Dragon.

They'd also be easier to tame and train at that stage of life - I don't know if it would even be possible to tame and train adult Drakes and Dragons. You do make a good point about the length of time it takes for the Dragonling to mature.

exactly a black market for pets, or any reason to get a pet, save a traveling merchant, circus etc

When the veil tears open it kills your mabari pup and that is what drives your character to become the Inquisitor and find the person who is responsible for the death of your pup and make him pay.

When it comes to a Mabari, I can take it or leave it, really. If the developers decided to drop him and allocate the time and resources that would've been spent on him toward something else, I wouldn't be sad.

NO ! JUST NO ! No potion morphing. They could simply make us chose a dog and stick with the one we chose. I don't  think that a dog will be at the same importance level as in DA:O. Maybe more like DA2
