So, part two of my DA:I preparation canon playthrough. I went through DA:O and DA:OA as a DW rogue and had to respecc to Archer at the and because of equipment loss. I had already gone through DA2 with a DW rogue two years ago, so that was out, but I enjoyed auto-crit archer, so I was considering going that way in DA2, following mjharper's guide (social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/305/index/6977721). Just got into Kirkwall on Nightmare, and it was tough AND boring. Idk, maybe getting to auto-crit just isn't worth it until you finally get there.

So I was wondering: Purely subjectively, is the playstyle of a Spirit Healer (like ezrafetch's guide social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/305/index/6872606) more fun than the point + click of an archer? It seems to be the only mage build out there that doesn't require Blood Magic to make it work, and I don't want my Champion dabbling in that ****.

I'd appreciate any input - and if you tell me to scrap everything and play as a warrior, I might even listen, too ;-) Thx

EDIT: I would also really enjoy mostly using fun companions instead of annoying companions. In my book, that may mean going with Fenris/Varric/Isabella than with Anders/Sebastian/Merryl/Aveline. That may also be in favor of the Spirit Healer. Do you agree?

I played DA2 as a Spirit Healer/Force Mage on Nightmare. It was fun for me, playing this combo is also safe because you are almost invincible even on nightmare. I also didn't like the idea that Hawke would use blood magic, just didn't make sense.

Archer is alright, its just not as much fun as a DW Rogue for me.

Well they're both kinda back-row fighters, but FF will be a consideration if you're going with elemental spells for the mage. On the other hand, you do get the lovely Creation tree which is worth it for Haste alone, without having to drag Anders around with you the whole time.

I did love the Archer build, but I do also think you kinda lose something by not being in the thick of battle. Not very Champion-y. Just my preference.

Well I don't play on Nightmare but I enjoyed mowing things down with a bow. I found the Warriors to be the most boring but I play with them anyway 'cause I'm a warrior type of guy. I think I played once as a sprit healer. I wasn't optimal or anything but Its fun resurrecting guys back into the action.

It's too bad you find archers to be boring. I think it's great but not as interesting as a melee rogue.

I never really got into archer but playing a spirit healer does allow you to dispense with Anders if he annoys you. I have a recent force mage/spirit healer build that's a lot of fun and doesn't do bodily fluids. To paraphrase Varric - "Do we want to meet a spit mage?"

I usually do the spirit healer later in the game but that's a matter of preference.

I can vouch for spirit healer being incredibly fun, that's what I am on my current playthrough. Especially because, like you said, it allows for some flexibility in your companion choices, which is probably the most alluring thing about it (and in all MMOs I've previously played, healer was my preferred role).

Makes nightmare a complete breeze as long as you incorporate some elemental/primal spells into your rotation so you can contribute to the party's damage.

As for archery, it's certainly very powerful when you stack attack speed and spend a majority of your points in the assassin specialization (I found the actual archery tree pretty unimpressive), but the playstyle wasn't very interesting at all, to me at least. Found myself running Hawke completely on tactics and controlling Aveline a majority of the time...I abandoned the playthrough after the rock wraith and don't see myself picking it back up again.

They're both ranged styles of play. If you found being an archer boring, being a Spirit Healer doesn't sound like it's much for you, because the ENTIRE premise of it is being supportive and invincible. Maybe you'll get a kick out of being invincible and seeing your companions kick major ass, I know I did.

Both the archer and Spirit Healer really blossom into a powerful beast by the time you reach level 16. From there Nightmare should be considerably easier with each passing moment.

Archers have a pretty slow start but by the end of Act 1 they become really damn powerful. Build your Hawke up right and you'll be one-shotting Elite level enemies with ease on Nightmare. Just watch out for friendly fire...it can be a ****.

I'm usually not one to make my main characters in RPGs (in this case Hawke) a supporter/healer, but I can vouch that Spirit Healer is a lot of fun. More than you'd think. Give it a try, you might just like it :)

Recently did a Spirit Healer/Force Mage/Creation Mage playthrough on Nightmare, it was a joke. Literally only Varric died, a handful of times.
