As stated, when you arrive on Tuchanka for Grunt's "Rite of Passage" mission, both the greeter and clan leader (Wrex or Wreav) instantly know Grunt has yet to undergo the rite.

As a lore monger, does anybody have a theory? Or was this explained somewhere and I missed it?

If you bring Mordin along with you and Grunt to Tuchanka, you are provided with a bit of an explanation. He says something along the lines of "a hormonally induced adolescents ritual."

I just assume that Grunt is giving off a sent or other signs, like a dog/cat/horse in heat.

I guessed it's about the smell, Wrex came closer to Grunt and shaman referred to his smell being correct. I thought they smell in a certain way when they don't undertake the rite.
