'Bot-mods following their programming.

Thread reported = delete thread. One off-topic post = lock thread.

Users that should be banned for routinely taking thread discussion off-topic... does not compute.

They didn't bother to lock it, they didn't provide any reasoning. It just up and got nuked. God only knows why.

This is pretty clearly the tail end of the forums at the moment. No developer will post anything in the ME3 forums, and even the moderation is being handled by the nameless numbered mods. They're probably just EA corporate and haven't even met the Edmonton or Montreal teams.

We're just talking amongst ourselves here, which makes the issue of staying "on topic" kind of pointless for anything other than CYA purposes, to make sure that this forum isn't used as a platform to discuss anything controversial.

When they do finally put up a ME4 forum, I wouldn't be surprised if they try their best to limit any discussion of ME3 there. It is an interesting contrast between the DA and ME teams--Gaider and others faced criticisms of DA2 head on, apologised for some things and defended others. They remained involved and remarkably responsive. By contrast, the ME team responded to ME3 criticism by claiming artistic integrity and cutting off any significant interaction. This is especially interesting when you take into consideration that the ME team did actually put work into a DLC to at least try to address some of the complaints. It makes the comparative blackout more noteworthy.

Exactly how would discussion among ME fans be improved by random people posting random things in random threads?

And since when is the purpose of a forum to contact the developers of a game?

Because random ME fans have at random times posted things which were interesting or entertaining without regard for their direct relevancy to Mass Effect 3.

Among the purposes of a game forum on a developers web site, contact between developers and fans has always been one of the biggies.

They normally just lock if it drifted off-topic. To completly nuke it though is rather shocking, it had some pretty interesting discussion in it. Perhaps it descended into something completely out of order since I posted on it yesterday but to kill an entire thread because a few contributors get out of order is shockingly bad moderation. Get rid of the offending posts and warn the people involved.

Discussions on issues brought up by the games is off-topic now? That's an awful way of going about it. However as I said above my suspicion is that something must've turned unpleasant in there, otherwise it would've merely been locked (and if the general discussion was considered too of-topic I'm guessing it would've been locked earlier than it was).

The OP made a thread asking the mods where it went. They supposedly moved it to the off-topic section, but it has completely disappeared.

Didn't get deleted. Got moved to the Off-topic forum, but apparently never arrived. More info here.

I'm vaguely planning to repost the OP at some point (I have a saved local copy) but probably with a bit of an update to ensure that it stays on-Mass-Effect-topic enough to keep the mods happy.

I might go into a bit of detail regarding Shepard's death and resurrection as well, since that has a bit of relevance to the topic, especially if EDI is lying and Shep actually is now transhuman.

Same thing happened to the "if you chew out any character" thread a couple weeks ago. I woke up the next day it was posted to see how far it devolved just to find it...gone. I'm guessing it must have become a hate thread of sorts.

That sucks.

I wouldn't be surprised either. Discussions about the living/non-living or sentient/non-sentient qualities of synthetic life always seems to descend into people taking turns calling each other "idiots" and "space racists".

Threads that have gone off the rails are usually locked. Off-the-rails threads that really shouldn't be seen anymore are usually removed from public view, but Moderators still have access to it in our Cave of Secrets. Threads can also be deleted from the site completely, though that is a last resort and is the kind of "nuke from orbit" solution we try not to use too often.

BioWare Edmonton's ME3 team has moved on to a different project, and the next ME game is being developed out of BioWare Montreal, who don't usually post here anyway. Besides that, the game is still in early stages. BioWare's next release is Dragon Age Inquisition, which has its own forum and, if you'll look, has several devs participating in forum discussions, answering what questions they can, and alleviating what fears they can.

Once the next ME game gets to that point, it too will likely have its own forum and devs to chat with you. That's the way it's been working for the last 12 years.

and even the moderation is being handled by the nameless numbered mods. They're probably just EA corporate and haven't even met the Edmonton or Montreal teams.

The numbered Moderators work for a community moderation company hired to, well, moderate the community. They've been a great help to us named Moderators, providing us with extra eyes and hands over the entire BSN. They are, as far as I know, not an EA studio, and no, they probably haven't met any of the devs in person, since they are not, again, as far as I know, based in Edmonton or Montreal or any EA studio.

We're just talking amongst ourselves here, which makes the issue of staying "on topic" kind of pointless for anything other than CYA purposes, to make sure that this forum isn't used as a platform to discuss anything controversial.

The Site Rules that you, and every other user, explicitly agreed to follow and be governed by, apply at all times on the BSN.

Devs participate in the BSN of their own volition, on their own time. Those who participate do so because they love their job, the game they're making, and the community. This does not make them valid rage targets, and they can, at any time, cease their participation in forum discussions. Chatting with devs is not a right granted to BSN users, and abusing devs is explicitly against the Site Rules. They do not work for you, you do not pay their salary (contrary to some people's belief), and they are not obligated to respond to every question, accusation, theory, comment, opinion, demand, suggestion, or plea any user makes. That sounds harsh, but they're here because they want to be. It'd be a bad idea to make them feel unwanted.

Anything further about the BSN can be discussed in the Social.bioware.com Site Help forum. Any specific questions or clarifications about my post can be sent to me via PM. Thank you.

End of line.
