if there was a 'hardcore' difficulty you could select for this, then I'd be up for that. but not for normal games, considering how buggy this game gets with lag

Making it an optional difficulty would be acceptable, but I'd go a tad further; make it private and without any chance of accidentally dropping into it while searching.

I would expect that most people would totally hate this idea after all the time we have played but it would have been accepted if that was a penalty from day one.

I would have stopped playing the game the first time this happened.

So if you failed once, your odds of failing again go way up because you have a lower leveled character. That sounds...awful.

I'm not sure why a penalty is desirable at all, beyond the standard "mission failed, no credits/exp for you". Games are supposed to be enjoyable. Challenging is fine, but punishing is not fine.

No because if you can't handle gold with a level one you go and play bronze.

There is no real challenge is there, there is no real tense moments to extract at all.  Heck people had to be bribed to not just lay down after wave 10 because there was no incentive at all to extract.  There is virtually no bad result for the player if you wipe.  If anything the last wave would be a lot more enjoyable and tense if there was some form of viable penalty.  Don't like the back to level one?  (Which is logical, your level 20 guy died they have to bring in a new recruit) then what else could there be to make extraction important?

And now you're forcing players to play a difficuty they don't want. A game should never make a player do something they don't want. If it does, people will stop playing, which is counter productive, especially in a cooperative game. Again, there's a big difference between rewarding for success, and punishing for failure.  The former is acceptable, the latter is not.

I see, so the same forum that has railed against low level characters leeching on higher levels has a sudden change of heart if it may affect them?

Why is punishment for failure unnacceptable?  It's there in everything we do.  As I said before if this was a design decision from day one in this game there would be an acceptance of the toughness of the game and people would play accordingly.

I get ticked off when I don't extract and extra ticked if the team wipes.  It has nothing to do with the fact I've lost a few thousand exp and a few thousand credits, its because I failed the object of the game.

Well you just said it, you're ticked off. That's punishment enough. Not everything in life sole purpose is fun like games are supposed to, so punishment for failure doesn't really fit the mold of it's purpose. And yes, while low level people leeching is annoying, it's still a choice. It's why most people hate the store, because of the lack of control the player has on what they get. Start punishing players, and stop letting them control what they do in the game, and you won't have anyone playing your game. If you designed a game studio and that was one of the concepts you came up with, you'd be bankrupt after your first title.

Yeah if they don't extract, maybe they're dead and have to be replaced. They don't always send rookies out on missions you know. And no one ever comes back from behind enemy lines (how hard could it be since every enemy vaporizes when time runs out anyway). But if you're just now starting to throw your hands up about how stuff works, you may want to start questioning medi gel, and ops packs, and dodging through walls, and all the other space magic this game has. Just have fun like everyone else.

A more logical punishment for failing to extract would be loss of credits/XP earned for that mission.
However how would new players learn to play if that was to happen. It's bad enough starting out with little in the way of consumables early on if you had nothing to replace the ones you lost during the last match leechers would Gel even less than now.

OMG, I actually remember the original thread. This makes me feel like some kind of fossil.
I am sorry, but the idea is as stupid as it was back then. Implement this and people will leave faster then fasterthenfasterthenlight. Not to mention that it´s completely unnecessary.
