Long story short, I would be very thankful if someone could
share with me exactly how, when, and where you unlock the barrier bonus power
for Shepard. I’ve already checked dozens of guides around the internet and all
of them just give tips on its use, the only actual “how to unlock” information
I could find was on the wiki, and that seems to be inaccurate. The instructions
were very simple and straight forward.

“Talk to Kaiden in the hospital after Priority: Palaven.”

That was it. No further information available. And obviously
it didn’t work when I did. I don’t have a save just before that point, and
would have to start over to try again so I really don’t want to unless I know
for a fact it will work the second time around. My only thoughts are it just
bugged out on me like the Aria: Blue Suns mission is said to sometimes do, or I
was supposed to head back to Kaiden immediately after the priority mission rather than taking
a few minutes to grab all the war assets in that system first.

Been a long, long time since I unlocked the bonus powers - even longer for barrier since I had to import a save where Kaidan survived Virmire first - but I seem to remember not getting Barrier until after Priority: Citadel II.

It would make sense that you have to invite Kaiden back on board the Normandy to get the bonus power.

Well i never had Kaiden alive so im not 100% sure on this, however based on Liara and James it probably comes late in the game, for James you get carnage after he meets you in your quarters about joining N7, and you get stasis from Liara after you talk to her about Thessia falling. I assume there is a mid to late game conversation with Kaiden that unlocks it.

Yeah, you get one if you talk to Kaidan on the Normandy right after Citadel Coup, which should be Reave.  The wiki says talk to him in the hospital for Barrier, but I didn't think I actually unlocked that one until meeting him at Apollo Cafe on the Citadel.

If I remember correctly, I unlocked Barrier with Kaiden after inviting him back aboard the Normandy.

As a general rule of thumb, you gotta be total BFFs with your whole squad until you unlock every bonus power. Then you can ignore them and their inane drivel for the rest of your playthroughs :P
