Shanedan.

The hot topic is choosing between races now that the feature is back, along with the inclusion of Qunari...but which class do you plan on starting the game as?

Personally, I picked Mage for my first playthroughs of Origins and DA:2. Not gonna breaking the cycle/traidition. I've always favored mage classes in RPGs, Dragon Age is no exception.

Though I eventually plan on playing every race and class as I do in all Bioware games, I always start off a mage and end up doing more mage playthroughs than any other class. In my 8 DA:O playthroughs, 4 of them were as a mage, 2 as a rogue, 2 as a warrior. In my 6 DA:2 playthroughs, 3 of them were as a mage, 2 as a rogue, 1 as a warrior.

I hope each race has their own unique class specializations. It should make sense that Qunari mages have different specialties of magic than humans or elves, and vice versa.

So, which class do you guys intend to choose during your first playthrough?

Panahedan, and cheers Image IPB

Same. I always thought there could've been a legitimate compromise, or as you mentioned "extended rights." Didn't have to become a war/rebellion, damnit Anders Image IPB

If they confirm Cullen as a companion, I'm totally rolling a mage my first go. ;)

But my favorite class is rogue.

Depends on what kind of companions we get. If we can`t equip different weapons on our companions again, it will be a factor. It was why I never played an archer in DA2. I wanted Bethany to be a warden....that meant her, Varric and Anders for the Deep Road expedition. Zero melee. Messed up situation.

Likely warrior. I may do a mage playthrough later, but it will heavily depend on the type of spells mages will have this time. Warrior is pretty much a "see what spells they have and if I don't like them, I don't need to start a new damn game" type thing.

Mage. In DAO I couldn't be a mage in most of the origins. In DA2 I had to kill Bethany to be a mage (although first playthrough I was a mage)

Since I already have a rogue and a warrior, I'm determined to add a mage to mah collection of DA protagonists.... Unless I somehow change my mind about my canon Inquisitor and decide it should be a dwarf. Then I'd have to be a mage next game. >.<'

I honestly don't know. All the classes are changed once again, so what I liked before won't matter as much now. I mean in Origins 2 handed weapon warriors were rather unfun for me but is one of my favorites in DA2, dual wielding rogues were my favorites in Origins but were less fun in DA2, didn't much care for mages in Origins but enjoyed them much in DA2. I will decide as we get closer to release as I get a better look at how the classes have been changed and how their new playstyle is. I don't want to set myself on playing as a certain class only to see some gameplay of that class and it be disappointing.

...Unless dual wielding warriors are back. In which case I am picking that unless it's truly terrible.

Oh and if we're mentioning races... Qunari/Kossith/horny people/giants/oxman/whatever the hell you call them

With how the whole fanbase rejoiced to that race being playable, I highly suspect that will be far-and-away the most picked race for a first playthrough. A year from now when Bioware releases collected playthrough data will probably confirm that. I'll probably pick a female one considering we've never seen one in-game before and I love the idea of subverting "only male Qunari can fight".

I make one of each class, play each one a little bit and than decide which one will be the first. However, I've selected the rogue first in the previous two DA games.

I always do a warrior first. That's my tradition, male human warrior goody-two-shoes for first playthrough. But I always end up doing enough playthroughs that I play every class at least once or twice.

Actually though, it would be interesting to play as a female mage Tal-Vashoth. That would be the biggest "screw you Qun" possible. Female fighting=check, unbound mage=check, left the Qun=check

I still won't decide yet, but that has potential.

We can equip our companions with any weapon type that's in their class and make them whatever we want, if you want Cassandra to be a S&S or a 2H warrior you're free to do so also after that you can still equipment them with the other though Varic may be the only exception.

@Mike_Laidlaw Love the PAX stuff Mike. Quick question. Is Cassandra a two-handed warrior or s/s? Are companions weapon restricted again?5:06am - 1 Sep 13

@DragonTheorist It'll be up to you. Restrictions are only by class, not by follower.12:11pm - 1 Sep 13.

That's funny, I found being a mage in Origins was more fun than being a warrior or rogue. Crazy potential of damage, AOE, and crowd control if done right. Plus when you get both the Arcane Warrior and Spirit Healer specializations...it's all over. Even on nightmare Image IPB

Once again funny because I felt the BEST team combination in DA:2 were those of a entirely or mostly ranged sqaud. You just keep a solid distance and basically mow down enemies before they ever reach you with talents and basic attacks. The only time I ever used someone to melee with my mage team is Aveline, and she was simply to distract.

Favorite mage team setup was; Mage Hawke, Merrill, Anders, Varric. Occassionally I'd swap Anders for Aveline.

I do agree that being a mage in DA:2 means Bethany gets killed off is a real shame. I really liked her, I can't stand Carver most of the time lol.

If Dual wielding warrior is back i'll go for that.
If not a toss up between Rogue or Mage. Maybe Rogue as i never get to be a rogue in DA2 because the best 2 characters imo are rogues.

Rogue archer. I usually go for rogues since I like being self-reliant for things like lock picking and trap removal. Mage would be my second choice.
