Part 3 of the 4 part series is online now
Part 3

Nice insights to design decisions, and character depth

Nothing groundbreaking but if you're hungry for ME2 related media, it's a good listen.

Towards the end,7:30 Hudson confirms that there is no Elcor squadmember in ME2, but it's "certainly possible in the future" B)B)

Casey sounds wonderfully incoherent again.

Is the man drunk off his ass whenever he's giving an interview?

Very interesting interview.

First question's answer sounds a lot like indirect confirmation, I think. :P

I only listened to the last part so far. What he said about Liara and Garrus having an equally large role in ME2.......I find that hard to believe. One is a close to confirmed squadmate, while the other is not. That makes me think he's just saying that to avoid having to out and right say, "Garrus is a squadmate while Liara isn't, so of course Garrus is going to have a bigger role then Liara" . It's either that or Liara is going to find a way to still be apart of the main story in a big way, whether that be a squadmate or not. I also noticed, and it was kind of funny to me, was that he constantly says "uh" and "uhm" when he's pausing or ending a sentence. It's something that I've seen a lot of people do in real life, but seeing as this is just audio it kind of jumps out at me more. Well, it was a good hear anyways, and I'll probably listen to the other two later.

*Spoilers?*

They should just confirm Garrus already. We already have pics of him in the Squad Selection screen on top images of cutscenes with him on the squad. :P

See, this is the mistake I think a lot of people are making. For me, Captain Anderson and Captain Kirahe had much larger roles in the original game than say, Tali or Garrus. I mean sure you can talk to Garrus and Tali a lot and even do a side-quest involving Garrus, but they so rarely DO anything of importance other than fight by your side, which, quite frankly almost anybody could do.

In that respect, I could very easily see Wrex, Liara and Ashley/Kaidan having just as large a role as any of your squad-mates.

Yeah, I definitely sense a lot of wordplay with his Garrus/Liara answer. :)

I already assumed that a society as old as the asari would have a few planets that they would consider to be their homeworlds. Like, if the quarians both returned to their old homeworld, AND put forth a serious effort to colonize and build upon a second world, I would think both as homeworlds and only initially colonies.

Well this would depend on what you would define as a large role, right? When you say that anyone can fight by Shepard's side, the same could be said about Anderson and Kirahe IMO. The way I define "large role" would be a character that would influence my own Shep or a character that engaged me. When I say engaged I mean I cared if the lived or died.

Anyway, I don't think that it's a mistake to say that Garrus and Liara had large roles.

By all means, I understand what you mean and as far as ME1 is concerned I can dig that.  ME2 though, the main basis behind the game is about the loyalty of your squadmates and sucide misson.  Just the fact that Garrus is one of the teammates that is going to be apart of the sucide misson and whose loyalty you have to gain IS a big role to me.  To say that Liara is going to have an equal role to that, while probably not being around a good chunck of the game, I rather doubt it.
It's one thing to say that in ME2, Joker is going to have a big role because he's the one flying the Normandy and we've gotten confirmation about how there's going to be cutscenes that have to do with our upgrades to the Normandy and what have you.  Then there's Liara, who's working for the Shadow Broker (confirmed in magazine), and unless she's seriously giving out tons of info the entire game I doubt she'll be on par with the role of Garrus.  Granted, I haven't played the game yet and it's just speculation on my part.  I'm just saying, from what we've seen and heard, especially with the games emphasis on the squads loyalty and sucided misson, I really do doubt what Casey said.  We shall see.

Er, Tali has a side quest as well. And she's central to the plot in providing the data about Saren; likewise Garrus is a glimse to how the C-Sec operates.

That would be so awesome. I've always wanted an elcor squad mate. You could just send them barreling in like a tank and then clean up the mess, or you could mount rockets to their shoulders and just have them blast away.

You weren't actually comparing Garrus' importance to the plot to Tali's were you?

Well considering that Asari are in a loose confederation the idea that they consider more than one world their homeworld is possible

and I will get this Elcor squadmate!

I wouldn't call that a side-quest... unless I'm totally missing something. More like a single decision.

Anyway, I'd say they're interesting characters, but they're not as proactive in the plot as somebody like Captain Kirahe, or Captain Anderson is. Even Wrex has pretty strong principles that he'll act upon when it comes down it, though he's mostly in the same boat of inactivity.

I'm just saying, you don't need to be a squadmate to play an important role in the story.

Well this would depend on what you would define as a large role,
right? When you say that anyone can fight by Shepard's side, the same
could be said about Anderson and Kirahe IMO. The way I define "large

character that engaged me. When I say engaged I mean I cared if the
lived or died.

What do you mean? Anyone could occupy Captain Kirahe or Anderson's role? Well, maybe, but believably, for Anderson you'd need somebody worth respecting, because he's your mentor of sorts. Same goes for Kirahe to a lesser extent.

The biggest contribution Tali and Garrus make to your mission after the Citadel is just fighting alongside you and providing the occasional quip. They're not even on the bridge when your approaching Ilos. And in the post-mission briefings they rarely provide any insight and just say the dialogue that needs to be said.
