It seems that the development of the new Mass Effect is playable already while still under development.

I'd be lying if I said that there wasn't any excitement to accompany my cautious optimism.

So there's a playable pre-alpha build, and they still aren't going public with the title or any details.

It's as if they're afraid if us.

As they should be! This one is going to be make or break because if they annoy fans and play ignorant in their "artistic integrity" again it is going to be bye bye birdy. There are so many good titles coming out next year that raise the bar. If they don't lift their game it will be drowned out by every other good game. I for one was a fan of the series pre-ordering and buying every dlc until ME3. The next one i will not be pre-ordering and will be watching very closely with caution.

I'm pretty scared, because ME3 came out last year, and now, it's already playable with how much they've gotten done? :S I love this series, and I will buy this new Mass Effect, but I'm just hoping it will really deliver. I'm no hater on ME3 though.

"Playable" could mean just about anything, folks.

Anyway, it's refreshing to see the enthusiastic folks in the comments.

Playable, sure. It's currently in the "Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing" stage of development.

A bit longer than that - March 6th will be two years since ME3.  That puts the time frame as the same as between ME2 and ME3.  By this time in 2011, there was already talk of the demo for the multiplayer.  And that was without the benefit of an ME-dedicated studio in Montreal.

Pretty exciting all the same.  With Inquisition coming in the fall, how much further behind will the next Mass Effect be?  I'm trying to remember the spacing between DAO and ME2...

At any rate...woo HOO :wizard: go BioWare!  Looks like I've gotta get my replays started here before too long!

So?

I'd like details on the story, timeframe, etc.... I don't need to know when it is playable at its most basic level

This is just to tease and keep interest. Giving away hard details about the story is probably not the best idea when these things can be subject to change as development progresses.

It's not even an official tease, just GameInformer reporting on a Twitter message.

Great time playing the next Mass Effect game in Montreal. Ambitious. Beautiful. Fresh but recognizable. And fun!

Oddly enough, it'll probably end up like that as a final release.

Not that I would complain. Going in reverse in that game, and it's like the TARDIS and the DeLorean crashed into each other while flying at Ludicrous Speed as they flew backwards around the sun.

If the TARDIS and DeLorean collided while going ludicrous speed, the TARDIS would probably use its failsafe and put its explosion in a continuous loop, resulting in a sun that looks like a flannel sweater.

I think it is more of a case of Bioware doing what it has always done.

In the past when Bioware has had multiple games in development all the hype and promotion goes to the one closest to release. I don't expect to hear a whole lot about the new Mass Effect project until after DA:I releases.

Hopefully there will be a teaser of sorts sometime soon, though I'm not holding my breath. They wouldn't need to have the whole story figured out to release a good teaser/trailer either(Hell, Bioware didn't even know how their story was going to end after ME2 was finished). I remember the Halo 2 trailer when it came out. That whole sequence didn't even end up in the final product.

However as Kaiser said earlier, my optimism is tempered by caution.

I'd guess that the "playable build" they have has blocked out levels, non-final models, possibly no animations, audio, or combat mechanics. "Playable," at this point, may just mean in-game events are represented by a block of text that explains what the cinematic or scene will look like once finished.

Just a guess, mind you. I'm sure y'all will have plenty of time to squee once BioWare starts announcing stuff. :)

Hudson was playing it back in August. He tweeted about it. It's been playable for quite awhile. I just hope BioWare doesn't succumb to EA rush dev times like Dice and what has happened with BF4. I hope they get the time they need. I'm optimistic they will, because EA is gonna get torn a new one by the big boys that took down Enron. The EA rape train is coming to stop very soon. I hope BioWare and other devs reap the benefits.

My thoughts as well - didn't quite get a trailer at the VGAs, so I'll be focusing on other things for the moment.

I'd like details on the story, timeframe, etc.... I don't need to know when it is playable at its most basic level.

There'll inevitably be previews beyond a teaser trailer or the like...though it's very difficult at this point to know when that will be.

If I remember correctly, ME3 was delayed for polishing purposes. So I'm personally not expecting a rushed development.

No, it would be one of those angry sentient stars.

Good point. It would be weird to call a block of text "ambitious", "beautiful" and "fresh" though. Seems like there could be a recognizable game there from the choice of words in the tweet.

Hahaha, that's pretty much true, Stan. We all squeel to the new Mass Effect regardless...:wizard:

My hope is that "playable" means they haven't changed much as far as game play and mechanics go. I would prefer NOT seeing lots of new features, but instead to see the ones we already have cleaned up. There are not that many bugs in the game, but there are a few (like with defense drone, or Dark Sphere 5A). I like the way ME3 plays and do not need to see any major revamps.
