I don't see how not being sexually attracted to another race equals being a racist

@AresKeith: You misunderstand - it's disagreeing with someone that makes you a racist. Duh.

I would argue that a character who doesn't grow and change through their interactions with others is a shallow, badly written character.

I'm not arguing that I should be able to change a character's mind on any and all points. I am arguing that I should be able to change their mind on some points, and I'm arguing that racism should be such a point.

Well, I completely agree that characters should grow. The way you wrote it at first just made me think that you meant the player should "choose" character growth.

Good characters are the kind that overcome their flaws.

I agree with this. Even Velanna overcame her hatred, at least to some degree. And hatred isn't the easiest feeling to let go of.

Well, not so much for me, she's always dead in my playthroughs........ :innocent:

I do like it when characters in a game have their own preferences and motivations, so I would have no problem with racially restricted romances. I replay the heck out of Bioware games, and tbh, the romance is a relatively minor draw for me compared to other aspects of the game so I tend to be pretty flexible on this issue.

No, I don't want complete restrictions, however I would enjoy some major ones.

For example, I don't want it to be impossible to romance a Dwarf just because I'm a different race, however, I would love it if it was a much harder process because you're a different race, since naturally everyone is skeptical of the unknown.

Basically, a Dwarf Inquisitor would probably have an easier and shorter time solidifying a romance between another Dwarven companion/NPC. A human/elf/qunari trying to romance said dwarf, a tougher process. But NOT impossible.

Lol no thnx. There's not going to be very many romance options to choose from as it is, especially between the same gender. >.>

Until/unless DA can offer a numerous choice of LIs per game, restrictions of any kind (race, gender, sexuality, etc) are not welcome. If we had four-five LIs of each gender to choose in from each game, then yeah, maybe make one or two restricted to a certain style of gameplay. But as long as we have only two males or two females to choose from, then all four LIs need to be fair game for all players, otherwise we're just backpedalling to 2005.

Racist characters should be able to be enlightened through their interactions with the PC.

How about no?

If it makes since for the character then yes. Say you have a elf who hates all humans. It wouldn't make since for you to easily be able to romance him/her if you were playing as a human.

In such a case, I'd say it should be harder for a human to romance said elf.  But not impossible

Umm.....if there are 4 romances, 2M 2F, and you play as a gay character, you'd have two options. If you play as a straight character, you'd have two options....if you play bi....you'd get 4 options! (assuming all the romance options are again 'player-sexual')

So the most options would be for a bi character in that senario. Straight and gay would be limited.

I don't think they should be racially restricted, mostly because there just aren't that many to begin with, so restrictions would limit the number of options too much.

I'd like that, only to see every easily offended people to lose their cool.

With the 1000+ pages long Talimancer threads (plural folks) gone, BSN needs a reminder that what it is truly capable of.

If you had your way, Thedas would be the most boring place ever. Everyone would get along a hold hands singing kumbaya =P

We needs major differences in opinions and opression and conflict to make things interesting =D

It's very telling that you need bigotry to make your stories interesting.

@Plaintiff: Do you often find that you convert people to your enlightened state being so nasty all the time?

If "strictly in situations where it applies" is too much, then maybe that says something about the general state of this forum.

I don't think it's inherently a terrible idea for specific characters - I'd want it to be exception rather than rule - but if we're going to restrict romances there are other things I'd prioritise.

I don't waste time on lost causes, I just try to keep it from spreading around.
