I would like the options while still being restricted in some aspects. Say we have the option to flirt and attempt to initiate a romance with a character, but the option to SUCCEED at that romance attempt is based on the character in question. They may make it clear that they are only interested in a certain gender or their own race.

I would approve of having the option to try, but not necessarily having the capacity to succeed. Sometimes you just can't get the girl/guy since they simply aren't interested.

I'd like NPC's to be believable. I mean, if it makes sense to have my character butt heads with NPC's on certain things, that's absolutely fine. Likewise, it would be equally fine to have PCs or NPCs influenced enough by others\\events to change their own opinions during the game. Its all dependent on the quality of writing.

EDIT: What I wouldn't want to see is romances - and relationships more generally - unaffected by such things.

Racist characters should be able to be enlightened through their interactions with the PC.

If you had your way, Thedas would be the most boring place ever. Everyone would get along a hold hands singing kumbaya =P

We needs major differences in opinions and opression and conflict to make things interesting =D

I would think that it's a tad unrealistic to believe that every racist can be swayed by rational arguments and examples.

In such a case, I'd say it should be harder for a human to romance said elf.  But not impossible

That would make an interesting and non-trivial romance.

But we're not talking about reality, we're talking about fiction. And the point of an RPG is to give the player some modicum of control over how the story unfolds, isn't it?

Besides, who said anything about trying to convert every racist? Or even that the party needs more than one racist in it?

Why not have a character that progressively gets more jaded, bitter and racist throughout the game, that would be some more interesting character development.

Now that's a refreshing change, or even causing said Character to become more jaded, bitter, and racist like "hardening" them.

Thanks mate, you just gave me an idea for my unavoidable 3rd playthrough for DA2: Act I Nice, Act II Sarcastic, Act III Aggressive.

It's only interesting if you're unaware of the fact that that's basically how every racist person develops already.

How about no?

Calm your ******, big boy, nobody said anything about trying to enlighten you.

Either way, enlightenment should come from someone without a massive persecution complex.

I miss being able to play racist Shepards in ME, DA2 let me kill off a Dalish clan, but it never let me really be racist against them.

I like playing characters like that, I find it much more fun

Agreed and it makes perfect sense in-universe (Sigh).

Lol, "prosecution complex". And my screen name is "Plaintiff". You are secretly very witty.

But I don't see how my obsessive compulsion for instituting and conducting legal proceedings against someone in respect of a criminal charge has any bearing on my ability to discuss racial issues.

That's disappointing.

Yeah, well, someone from SC, such as yourself, would want to play their characters in such a way, you bigot. How dare you stand against equality!

Isn't picking your character's gender and class an in game choice? I don't remember (or maybe I got rather lucky) any copy of Dragon Age that came with a scanner that checks ones genitals and physique, then forced them into the appropriate class.

You need to play DA again, then.

Do I need to call customer support and ask for my scanner? Because I never got one.

Playing a jack-ass can be fun, sure, but playing a bigot is just... ugh.

I don't consider anything to be "in-game" until I'm actually playing.

Putting your character together isn't "playing", it's like... setting up the Monopoly board and fighting over who gets to be the top hat.

Interspecies relations are apparently not unheard of in Thedas, and all love interests so far have had fairly justified reasons for liking the PC no matter what.

Leliana seemed more pansexual than bisexual in all honesty, and in a universe with multiple sentient races, she's not likely to care about a silly thing like whether you're a human, a dwarf, of an elf.
Morrigan needs a warden baby, mixed race or not, and she'll probably like you better than Alistair as long as you're walking on two legs.
Zevran likes any port in a storm.
Alistair has elf lovin' in his blood already.
I also doubt Merrill cares about Hawke being human considering how he was either one of her best friends or one of the few people with her real best interests at heart with the eluvian.
Fenris, well, he already falls for a mage potentially and that's a way bigger concern than race.

In the future though, I'd love to see racial restrictions on romance. Dragon Age is supposed to be 'dark' fantasy and not being attracted to someone for being a filthy shem or a dwarf isn't even that, well, dark.

Why not? Shepard can be a complete bigot to Batarians and Turians in ME1.
