Unless you're a shapeshifter, but Wynne calls Morrigan a maleficar despite Morrigan not being a blood mage because she practices a form of magic that isn't Chantry sanctioned so *shrug*

Technically, just playing through DAO as a mage and picking 2 specializations makes you a maleficar. Arcane warrior=unsanctioned due to it being an ancient and forgotten (and very powerful) form of magic that the Chantry doesn't even know about to sanction. Blood magic=well that doesn't need explanation. Shapeshift=as you said, and the reasons are that Templars can't so easily kill a giant bear or something as they can a mage who they can just shut their powers off and it allows easy hiding from Templars (if you can't tell, being hard for Templar's to deal with is grounds for being forbidden). This leaves spirit healer as the only selectable specialization that wouldn't get you in big trouble wi the Circle or Chantry. So you want to be a mage warden and actually use your second specialization point? Welcome to maleficarum.

Yeah, but the real problem is that stuff will go missing. Who's to say the Templars won't find out long before the hook is ready that someone wants one?

I doubt they keep track of every little object and item in the tower. Someone stealing a little metal bathing (or maybe for poop) pot from the "restroom" areas won't be missed. And a rope shouldn't be too hard, just sneak into that big storage area where you can fight spiders in the mage origin or go into the stockroom when Owen is sleeping (he won't miss a rope going missing), both should have rope avaiable.

They have a Senior Enchanter keeping track of the former potential rope source, and the guy keeping track of the latter is supposed to be literally impossible to track. And given how difficult it is to get more rope, you'd think they'd keep better track of it than that. But fine, maybe this will be possible for the first two or three mages who try it. Then the Templars will keep track of the rope quite strictly.

Or maybe a mage can just use magic or something to just make their hands sticky and literally climb the wall? Or just make a spell wisp and hold onto it at it flies you up? Or, while not a true spell you can use in the game, why not a glyph that flings upward when stepped on and just run into it to jump up there? Or maybe use lightning magic to make your hands covered in static electricity and climb the wall thanks to that? Magic lets you do all kinds of things that could get you up there, even without levitation.

The Cardinal Rule doesn't say levitation and teleportation are believed to be impossible. It specifically says that magical transportation is believed to be impossible.

Static electricity in the form of lightning magic is not teleportation or levitation. Grabbing your wisp as it flies is not teleportation or levitation, a spell applied to your hands and feet that is like the grease spell except sticky instead of slippery is not teleportation or levitation, a glyph of repulsion spell set to repel you upward is not teleportation or levitation. And none of these are exactly "transportation" magic, they can just be used as such.

Thankfully, being a Grey Warden means you can just say "too bad, suck it up and go soak your head or something" to Templars and the Chantry. Grey Wardens do what they must, and they just have to deal with the fact that I have diplomatic immunity to their religious laws. If I think brain washing Darkspawn to attack the Archdemon while making the Archdemon's blood boil in its veins is the best way to kill it, the Chantry has to just accept it.

*Rylock sets a trap and tries to arrest Anders*

Anders: You can't do this! King Alistair allowed my conscription!!!
Rylock: The Chantry supercedes the crown in these matters.

***

It's a fine theory but it doesn't work if the templars feel they are above secular law.

And I had the right to kill her and every Templar with her without any consequence, because my authority supersedes Chantry authority. So yeah, it is fine in practice. They step above their station and I can legally execute them. Chantry supercedes the crown about mages, but Wardens supercede the Chantry and the crown both in regards to their methods and recruitment.

I edited my last post with a new sentence, by the way.

At least one room has windows capable of jumping out of without having to levitate.

Unless, of course, you lose that fight. Or the Wardens might simply give in, which Anders' short story heavily implies to be the case ultimately.

The Harrowing Chamber is at the very top of the tower. If you lack the ability to fly or float, that'll be a lethal drop.

I imagine seeing them having windows on the ground floor, but they were really, really high up. I'd imagine that at the higher levels you'd get more regular windows cuz defenestration isn't really a valid escape method.

I think I misread the intention of jumping out the windows. I thought they meant mages doing that as a way of commiting suicide, not escaping.

Notwithstanding that that's not what we're discussing, that does seem like a more efficient use for said windows.

I was trying to answer Ryzaki's questions.

Then, yes, this works as an answer to that.
