I am running an infiltrator with the M-13 Raptor as a kind of designated marksman type class.  I rely on the Raptor for medium and long range, and for CQB I'm spamming a lot of incinerate and using the Avenger.  What I'm wondering is if I wouldn't be better off with one of the SMGs as a CQB weapon and wondered if anyone had any insight into this.

Which DLC/Weapons do you have available? For just the basic weapons, the Tempest would no doubt serve you better than the Avenger for CQC. If you have a wider selection of weapons and you are interested in rapid fire for CQC (the spray and pray approach to which I am partial) then the Piranha shotgun would be even better. That or the Harrier SMG. Eagle pistol works well too.

I'd say any SMG ist a better sidearm than the Avenger with Hurricane being the best of them all.
If you have it, try the Indra, it's like a fullauto Raptor.

I would say that all SMGs are better than the Avenger.

Blood Pack Punisher if you have DLC. If not, Hornet should be fine if you can put up with that recoil.

The Eagle pistol gets my vote: it is a literal machine pistol, and the piercing mod doesn't fit on the barrel as its a pistol, which makes putting the barrel extension (more dmg) on a no-brainer.

The Avenger isn't really meant for CQC. It's more of a mid/long range weapon similar to the Raptor. BPSMG, Hornet and Tempest would be better options.

Out of the standard weapons, the only one with lower DPS than the Avenger is the Shuriken, but it weighs less. The Avenger is one of the poorest all around weapons in the game.

Yep, it's quite sad that the iconic weapon of the game, the Avenger, is one of the worst weapons in the game. That said, both shotguns and SMG's are good CQB weapons. The Blood Pack Punisher, Hornet, and Tempest are the best SMG's. Shotguns give you more options to choose from, but mostly depend on your playstyle.

You may carry your sniper rifle, a heavy pistol and a SMG, and still keep the 200% cooldown bonus.
I run an engineer with Indra + Hurricane (UL materials V) + N7 Eagle, and the cooldown bonus was 196%.

How well does running an Engineer with a sniper work?  Thought about doing that, but sticking with the infiltrator at the moment (tactical cloak is full of win, IMO)

I don't think it matters much in Single Player. You can get by fine with an Avenger, if you wanted. At least I could with a Soldier. But the game isn't that difficult either way.

It runs fine, although it largely depends on what sniper rifle you use. Mantis can work, but you need some extra weapon damage from armor or Intel to make it work reliably.

The Viper is surprisingly good on the Engineer provider you take Ashley with Disruptor Ammo. The Viper will reliably prime enemies for tech bursts when using Disruptor Ammo with every single shot.

The Indra is good.

The Raptor should also be good although I have not used it all that much on the Engineer. Not sure about the Incisor as I have barely used it at all. I would ignore the Kishock as it is best used with the Soldier or Infiltrator. Do not even bother with the Javelin or Widow. The Black Widow would probably also be bad.

I have an imported Engineer with the same loadout minus the Eagle and it works very well long range and short range. You are only lacking in mid range firepower but it's a fun challenge keeping this tiny handicap. I haven't done NG+ with this character yet, so my guns are only at lvl5 and my CD is at ~184% IIRC.

IMO the best thing about this build is casting through the scope. Just as in ME2, BW simply never accounted for players being able to cast combos from super long range, so you can do some fun things with that.

You definitely want one of the lighter SRs running this build, just so you can keep casting. I used the Viper in ME2, but I prefer the Indra in ME3 for the steadier scope.

Despite ME3's charms, there's been just so much false advertising with this game.
