If more of us (women) played hard core vid games would dev's change? Probably not. Kaiden, Jacob, Thane and Garrus. Poor Femshep... Betrayed by 2, 1 is dying and 1 is biologically incompatible. IDK. Art imitating life?

You can't leave out Liara and Samantha. Liara is in the same boat as Kaidan with being available to both genders, and Traynor is exclusively femShep's option.

Really, when you look at it, romances are what separate BioWare games from most other RPGs.  The characters that are developed and the way their relationships evolve are what draw us in.  The options for Male Shepard's romantic possibilities are high quality.  You have the hardnosed, yet still physically appealing, Ashley, the magnificently gorgeous, black haired, big boobed, bulbous butted Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Lawson, Liara, the tatooed tantalizer Jack, and Tali, who is sweet, lovable, loyal, and is a shopped human goddess.  When you look at Female Shepard, who does she have?  Thane dies, Jacob messes with someone else, Liara, Kaiden, or Garrus.  2 humans in there and one doesn't have staying power at all.  Male Shepard has 3 humans and Tali, and they all appear in the end credits with a personal genuflection towards the fallen Commander.  What do you all think?

lol at that

As much as I love Bioware games, they don't have a real good history of making strong male characters as romance partners. Not just ME. The writers must think all males must be emotionally broken to be romatically involved. In DA2, for instance, Fenris and Anders are your only 2 male options. Both are seriously damaged goods in the emotional department.

I would challenge Bioware in the next game to actually produce a male LI that is you know....
emotionally stable, likeable, strong, and an all-round good person.

lol that was kaidan

That poster was talking about the options for straight Femshep.

Less than 20% of the player base is female. So... I suppose they scaled the hetero romance options down to allow the more than 80% playership more romance options.

This sucks for us. I've relied heavily on RPG games giving me equality on all levels, not realizing that sometimes dev's really do pay attention to the numbers and adjust accordingly.

Depressing as ****.

I get how Jacob could be seen as betraying a romanced Shepard; that was some skeevy writing on BioWare's part. But Kaidan? Is this about Horizon? 'Hi, I'm back from the dead and want you to follow me without question onto the good ship Cerberus, dude who grieved for me and has integrity for a middle name.' I don't see it. I've noticed it come up a lot, but I've never quite understood how it's a 'betrayal.'

Thane was already suffering from 'dead wife distant son' syndrome; I agree they didn't need to dump Kepral on him too. None of the female love interests got that treatment. I give Garrus a bye on the biological compatibility, just because I read him as the LI counterpoint to Tali who has the same problem.

By comparison to male Shepards, females ones do get a kick in the ass. They could've buckled down and made, say, Zaeed available in ME2 and Vega a full romance in ME3. At least that way there'd have been a little more variety and an option for straight female Shepards in 3 if the player didn't want to romance Kaidan.

I was throwing a temper tantrum in my other post (it's a bad time of the month and it's -10 degrees in my neck of the woods so I was being a miserable sack of ****).

But I still stand firmly in my belief that unless you choose Kaidan (which I will not...I do not like him) femshep has no true STRAIGHT LI. You cannot convince me (nor I bet a gay man) that the ultra feminine Liara is not indeed a woman with big breastesses; plus she is my femshep's best friend as she is the only one in ME2 to offer comforting words about Thane's mortality).

For obvious reasons in ME3: Thane being ripped out of the game too early and Jacob forced to cheat with a smile, and Garrus! Ok, I am sorry but this is how I see bioware shoving it in my face...he is meant for Tali (hell even when romanced he flirts with her in ME2). Oddly enough you can see that Tali LOVES maleshep more than Garrus CARES FOR femshep. To me it appears Garrus has a greater affinity for Tali than femshep considering how the hook up with femshep in ME2 feels like forcing him initially, but with Tali as soon as she subtly shows interest he is all over her. For femshep they could have at least made Garrus romanceable in ME3 given her only STRAIGHT option is Kaidan.

Also, I find it really awkward that If you dump Garrus on the date (so in this case you have been together a while) he jumps into a relationship with your best friend (Tali), while you are all living together on the ship. In real life I find that rather tacky and discomforting in its implication (they always had a thing for one another). How would you feel if you're best friend started dating a guy you have been seeing for a while a few days/weeks after you broke up? I'm sure the writers knew how this would look, and going back through the Garrus thread I know I am not alone. I can see them getting together if you break up with him after Palaven, but not after everything else. Kinda makes me wonder. Thane waited 10 years to love again. I doubt Garrus will wait 10 minutes after my shep takes the high EMS destroy option. Maleshep with Tali, I guarantee she'll be like Arwen in LOTR and grieve forever (poor girl).

Note: I know the break up mechanics run the same for Garrus and Tali in ME3, but overall you can see that Tali really loves maleshep in ME2. It doesn't come off the same way for Garrus and femshep in ME2. But he sure did jump to attention for Tali in ME3.

Is only 20% of the player base female? That seems low, I would have expected more.

My guess is that number came from the stats on how many players ran with a female Shepard (I think it was 18% on the infographic that went around a while back). It says nothing about the sex of the players themselves. In terms of female players, I'd expect the number to be higher; BioWare has a pretty large female fanbase.

That's still large. If ME3 sold around 4 million (according to VGchartz at least. Roughly the same as ME2), then 18 percent is still over 700,000 Femsheps.

Just to compare, many games (great games even) don't even break a million. Persona 4 didn't break a million. Something like 800,000 sales. That's a whole fanbase, and yet Femshep players alone almost equal it. It's only a small number compared to the likes of Halo or CoD or GTA which break the 10 million mark.

Well I am male and only use a femshep. There is no reason why the reverse can not be true.

Why's that?
