He's boring because in fact he isn't strong. He never shows any particular displays of competence. Unlike Garrus, who is hypercompetent, and thus, far and away the most popular love interest.

Jacob isn't emotionally unstable either, he's just boring

There's Thane. His character flaw is reptilian respiratory disorder.

I can see where youd get this, but he DID survive Eden Prime, he DID save the Council, and he WAS a corsair, thats the problem though

You're overestimating the BSN. Good options cause the crew to like you while bad options lock off romances? Yes, people would complain about it.

People seem to like Dragon Age: Origins well enough, which does this with the reputation system.

So you're somehow convinced that people who hate aliens would still want to romance aliens? If I've overestimating anyone it seems to be you.

I think you have that backwards, Garrus was made hypercompetent and a romance option because he was popular before hand.

Unfortunately the current system is quite limited (e.g. Tali will romance any guy named Shepard no matter how ugly, xenophobic or violently insane) so I feel that making everyone bi is less silly than arbitrarily singling out sex to determine romantic compatibility.

I hope you're not seriously suggesting that romances should be locked off if the game decides your player character is too ugly. Surely you realize the problems with that?

Not really. I think it would actually be a cool idea.

Granted, the game would have to titled Mass Effect: Galactic High School.

I can see something like that being pretty disastrous though, especially with the very good chance of locking players out after making their Shepards look like them. It's amusing to think about, but no doubt the fan outrage would make BioWare pull that feature pretty quickly.

I actually agree with David on this one. Jacob was a bit boring as a character. He was cool when we first met, and I was hoping to get more on the ex-Alliance turned Cerberus angle, but no...and if someone didn't play Galaxy, they have no idea about any of the other stuff besides Eden Prime. He mentions the Corsairs once.

Kaidan, I liked from the get go. Sure he's a boyscout of Superman porpotions, but is that really a bad thing? Why not romance someone stable like that? It's a good counerpoint to Garrus' "bad boy image".

Thane...was pointless, His onl function was to be a love interest, and as Shotgun Julia pointed out before, human/drell skin contact should have prevented this in the first place, along with his disease. What if instead of a Drell LI, he was a thoughtful Krogan? Or a Salarian?

Lastly, I would have made Miranda or Jack romancable by either sex, and Vega an LI for Femshep in 3.

Actually, I would have added Kaidan as an  LI from at least ME2, this way a gay Shepard won't have to spend 3 years (ok two of them dead) surrounded by interesting people, only to be waiting for "the right man" or his "brother in arms" to finally come around.

I remember once discussing a feature with another poster about an attractiveness meter for PC's. I thought it was an interesting idea to be honest.

I'd be ok with it, so long as the parameters were wide enough that you had to go out of your way to make an ugly enough character to have impact on the game.

Hmm, how would the game jusdge that though? Deviation from the central position of the proportion sliders?

I actually like the idea of an attractiveness meter. Though I'm not sure how it would measure attractiveness exactly.

The simple way would be to simply prompt the player to tell the game how attractive they are on a scale. Which would obviously cause dissonance if the player is a freak who gives themselves a 10 or vice versa.

Aside from that, I don't see any elegant and reliable way to do it. Certainly not by basing the central position as the 'most attractive.'

It's a very silly idea. Almost no players are going to want to play as anything but 'good looking' or 'really ugly.' All this would accomplish would be pissing people off when they find out the game apparently doesn't think they're very good looking.

That's the biggest issue there. Beauty is relative. Everyone sees it differently.

Ditto. I'd rather have Jacob any day over Garrus to be honest.

If you actually believe that, it should be rather obvious why it's a dumb idea to have the game measure attractiveness on a set scale.

In most games with facial customization, all the 'attractive' presets and popular fan customizations seem to have sliders for proportions (chin length, jaw width, nose heigth, gauntness, etc) near the center. This avoids things like jutting chins or lack of a chin, permanent duck face, wierd proportions, etc. which people generally find unattractive. It's obviously not perfect and there are many examples of decent looking characters with whacky proportions and terrible looking 'center position' faces. But if there was a way for a computer to evaluate attractiveness in a game I would say that's the best way.

Wait, wait, when did Garrus turn into "far and away the most popular love interest"?

Far and away the most popular male love interest. Certainly far more popular than Thane, Jacob, and Kaidan.

Oh yes, absolutely. Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

Although some people can be described as genuinely attractive(or ugly). I've seen a fair shair of Shep's that looked like cro magnon men.
