I don't normally go out and buy multiple games magazines each month but, well this month is different isn't it. Here goes for what the reviewers had to say.
Games TM
On the game’s opening sequence - “When the whole breathless ordeal drew a close and the game’s logo finally faded into view, we had to physically restrain ourselves from actually punching the air with the sheer excitement of it all.”
On combat – “The improved combat has been extolled in the pages of every magazine and website ad nauseam for a year or more and all that remains is for us to confirm that the rumours are true. If we were forced to choose, we’d take Commander Shepard over Nathan Drake or Marcus Fenix without even a second thought.
On exploration - “There seemed to be less planets you could actually land on and explore in Mass Effect 2, but those you could offered a more diverse crop of distractions: some based around combat, some not requiring a single bullet, some that played like self contained vignettes, some that spiralled off into multi-part crusades spanning the entire galaxy.”
Verdict - “Game of the year in January? Oh, go on then.” 10/10
360 magazine
“As close to perfect as any game can conceivably come. There is little to nothing to criticise here. Mass Effect 2 is among the finest games we have ever played.”
On combat – “Combat zones are no longer the barren, open-air surface of planetoid X or the soulless corridors of science station Y. Instead, like Gears of War, combat zones are built for battle.”
On characters - “They’re far more intricately conceived and individual than before. From Thane, the Drell assassin and strangely believable alien ninja whose moral code and philosophical ethics place him alongside Sun Tzu, to Subject Zero, a dangerous criminal whose rehabilitation can become one of your many concurrent pursuits, should you choose.
Verdict - “All side missions included, it should sap away a good 40 hours of your time and, quite unlike other chunks of your life of around this size – your working week for example – this one won’t feel wasted. The most easily justified perfect score we have ever given, one that carelessly gatecrashes our top five games of all time party. Bioware, we love you." 5 stars.
360 Gamer
"As enormous fans of the first game, we would have been happy with more of the same, and certainly didn't expect the graphical overhaul that ME2 displays. There are other subtler improvements to be found everywhere, from combat to conversations to the more expansive plot-line possibilities and the subtle flicker of eyelids. It’s without doubt a wonderful game through and through and one to be savoured, replayed and savoured again.” 9/10
Great job Bioware.
