It's not just the magazines that are getting Mass Effect Mania over here in Old Blighty. I was in my local Game store today. A guy came in asking for a copy of Mass Effect. "Sorry we're sold out," he was told, "You might try our other shop in the mall." "I already have," the fellow replied, "they're sold out too."
It seems people are frantically trying to play Mass Effect before ME2 comes out and there aren't enough copies to go around.

Somebody!! Get on the horn to EA, and tell those armchair dictators to reprint a few hundred thousand copies of ME1, and bring me my coffee!
Can't wait for the 26th, can't wait for the 26th, pant, pant.........now breath deep 1,2,3. thanks.

I have just read the review from Xbox 360 World, which is a magazine aimed largely at fans of shooters. They gave ME2 90% but the most encouraging thing was their reason for marking it down. Too much role playing!

"But there's two sides to Mass Effect 2. For all the action, for all the blasting with both weapons and biotics, there's the actual role playing - and boy is there a lot of it here. If you're a fan of the first game, or Bioware RPGs in general, then you will of course love this; if not, then your enjoyment of Mass Effect 2 is largely going to rely on how much you enjoy conversations."

However, the boys at Xbox 360 World are suitably impressed with ME2's combat.
"The actual gunplay, at least when you get access to better guns and more advanced skills, feels heftier and more brutal, and the bad guys react when shot thanks to nifty new hit locations and animations. They'll even fall to the floor and drag themselves up if they're not quite dead; they're not not stiff, sterile targets now."

Total PC Gaming gave it 9/10 too. i have the 360 gamer issue and even with their caveats and a certain amount of negativity they were blown away.

Another maximum score, this time from Xbox 360 magazine. They particularly praised the characters, the quality of the writing and the side missions.
"The script is far stronger, straying away from constant talk about galactic politics into a wider array of subject matter. It's funnier, heavier on quips than before - the Normandy's wisecracking pilot, Joker, thrives in this regard - and, most importantly, no longer sees the galaxy at large as the lifeblood of the story, but instead the characters are at the centre of it."
"The cast here is far more engaging than the archetypes presented in the fiirst game and Bioware wants you to understand the motivation behind each member of Shepard's party."
"No longer do we have hours of empty fetch quests and trawling across plains in the plucky Mako. There are no vehicle sections at all, no scanning keepers in the labyrinthine Citadel and no bowing to every petty whim of the galaxy's populace. The side quests are generally skewed around character development...We did every side quest and always found at least one startling revalation or great character moment, making them tremendously satisfying."
The consesus seems clear. Bioware have created something really special this time round.
