I think it's possible that Varric was included because a lot of people think he's a great character and fun to have around.  I hope he's not a romance option.  I think of him as that uncle that makes embarrassing but amazingly insightful and accurate jokes at family dinners.  It's pretty cool having a companion who can be your friend and isn't interested.  I haven't asked but I'm pretty sure most of the people I share stuff with aren't romantically interested and I value their friendship anyway.  

I agree with daveliam that no companion should be created for the sole purpose of being romanceable.  To paraphrase Varric, the story tells itself.  I'm sure if a dwarf character starts to develop in a way that suggests romance potential the writers won't squash the idea because there's a policy against dwarven romance.  I just think it hasn't happened yet.

I don't even think there is a heart option for Varric.  When Varric sits Hawke down for a talk about the LI, there's a sarcastic option that asks if Varric is jealous and there's an option there Hawke says, "Now what would I do without my trusty dwarf?  I'd cry myself to sleep without you."  That's about it, though.  I had forgotten about Aveline.  I agree that I like the way that was handled.

Ah. Yeah, I've played a partial female playthrough, and I don't remember seeing a heart option, either. The Wiki seems to think it's possible, though, which is odd.

Part of me thinks Varric won't be romancable because the comics suggest he is still stuck up in Bianca's memory. But an dwarf romance in general? Why not, I personally aways wished I could romance Sigrun.

She was sweet, wasn't she?  

I can totally understand why a player who likes to play dwarves would like to be able to romance one.  Having a LI that doesn't have to kneel or bend down for a kiss would be great and some dwarves may have rp reasons for wanting another dwarf.  

We did get 2 elven LIs in DA2, after all.....but no, not just for the sake of being a dwarf LI, or a qunari.

I wonder if cost considerations with rendering cutscenes with multiple body models is an issue?  And if it is how playable races will affect this in general?

I do think that if Awakening had romances, then Sigrun would have been a LI. She was cut out for a romance option. It's a shame that she was just in the expansion and not the vanilla game.

There was a flirt option after you go into the fade to help Faynriel only if Varric betrays you.
And when your at Merrill's house he says something like.. umm.. "Hawke can't keep herself off me, it's a shame I'm not into humans."
So if he IS romancable in DA:I there wouldn't be a height problem because I assume it would be Dwarf + Dwarf romance not Dwarf + Qunari.
Unless.. Varric likes anything other than humans. xD

I don't think they'd restrict the romances. Maybe if they make more than 4 LIs. I really want to romance Varric as an elf though tbh.

You're probably not only right but she'll probably be hated more than all of them combined.  She might even replace mages/templars as an object of contempt.

First, it's wrong because real life little people do not look like fantasy Dragon Age dwarves.

 My Dad's best friend has dwarfism. He's married to an average height woman and they have 5 children. There's nothing gross or unnatural about it and no one thinks it looks like pedophilia.

nah the Aveline handling was awful.
We don't know if there will be another dwarf in the party besides Varric.
At first glance it doesn't look like it.
