Has anyone else ever read the Dwarves series of books by Markus Heitz? He's a german author and his series takes place in a world where dwarves play a pretty significant role. The protagonist, most of his companions, and many of the powerful side characters are dwarves. It's really engaging and complex, but suffers a bit from translation issues. The main character has an active romantic life as well, always with dwarven females. I love it because that's so rare to see in many fantasy books.
Not familiar with him. Do you know if his books are translated to English?
While they weren't main characters, I thought Guy Gavriel Kay treated Dwarves very well in the Fionavar Tapestry. Sapkowski's Dwarves aren't just your typical comic relief, although they're fairly sterotypical as far as their appearance/culture goes. I've not read the Warhammer books, but heard there are a couple good ones centering on Dwarves as well.

Perhaps its because of books like these (and the Dwarven Nations Trilogy in Dragonlance) that allows me to be more open to dwarf romance. When not just relegated to comical aggressive drunkard supporting characters, I think dwarves are just as interesting to explore as characters. Varric is a nice step in that direction because he's much more than just "the dwarf" of the team. I'm cool with him not being romanceable, so that's not what I'm advocating for. I would like to see them another step in that direction by introducing a romanceable dwarf at some point. Again, not a dwarf just to romance, but a well crafted dwarven character whose story would be enhanced by allowing us to explore it by becoming closer to them. I'd personally prefer a guy dwarf (since I usually play for m/m romances), but it might be more well received if it were a female. While I, personally, wouldn't romance her with "canon" playthrough, I would definitely create a character specifically to do so if that were to happen.
I love Dwarves and tend to play them more than any other race when they're available as an option (actually currently doing another run through DA:O with a female Dwarf noble Rogue). As for romances, I've come to feel kind of 'meh' about them. I certainly wouldn't advocate against them, but I'd far rather see a well crafted, non-comic-relief, non-sterotypical Dwarf character or characters than than just another romanceable companion that happens to be a Dwarf.
