The definition of heroism is literally only great bravery. Are you suggesting that great bravery does not exist in real life? Seriously?

Bravery is bravery, and that does exist. Heroism isn't another copy of the word meaning, it comes from the word hero, you can check what that definition holds.

Tell that to all the people that I know that gave their lives for this statement's ability to be said. Every firefighter, every soldier, and every policemen.

I will gladly tell that to their face, if they are still alive.

I'm waiting.

 Hero
  • a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
I.e., someone who shows bravery. Please continue.

And there we go. Last 2 bolded qualities are subjective, and as such can be anything. If a thing doesn't have a clear definition it is meaningless.

Yes, but do you see the 'or' in there. That word also has a definition.

Well in that case: Heroism doesn't exist, and you can never be a hero.

Look, why don't we just say the word bravery, when we mean bravery? Heroism doesn't have only that meaning, it is a sum of things.

Too late, I already am. Got told I was a hero on Veteran's Day. Had a little Afghan girl who adored me because I gave her chocolate every time I saw her. Put my life up to give others who I had no obligation to a chance at a better life. Heroism does exist bud. And resorting to an etymological clarification fallacy to prove otherwise doesn't  change that.

Or are you a cynical trust fund philosophy major who always had it so easy that he could go around acting sardonic with a copy of Nietzche is his back pocket?

At any rate, being a hero in literary terms is well nigh impossible and boring even. Who is more interesting: Superman, the invincible do-gooder? Or Batman, with all his flaws and humanity.

A hero is no universal. You can be a hero for someone, while at the same time being hated by others, because you cause them harm.

I wouldn't hate the guy who caused me physical harm for that reason, unless he was intentionally out to maliciously cause me harm.

That's a symptom, not so much an actual cause. If I got hit in the combat zone, I'm not going to hate the guy that hit me, at least not for that reason.

Existence of a hero is like existence of ''the best tasting fruit''. Every person will have a different opinion. You might be a hero for that girl, but there is no universal hero, hell there are people out there that will condemn you for giving her candy, as bold as that might sound to you.

Obviously the people who made up the definition of the word 'hero' are wrong. KainD is only trying to enlighten us unintelligent people who use words words for their actual meanings instead of his/hers.

Quite literally, he is.

A Desert Shield and Desert Storm Vet.

I'm a Vet of Enduring Freedom. I'm not going to pretend I'm a badass, but I'm not going to say that I'm a temp at some chipper office job either.

There was a David guy on the Mass Effect forums, arguing against class interrupts and other innovative stuff, I guess you mean him then. Otherwise no idea.

Yeah, I know. They had something to say about it too.

We ended up disagreeing about a lot of things. I won. With a lot of help from my friends.
